Jan 1 2013 Paladin of Shadows
NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLING MILITARY ADVENTURE SERIES.

A new addition to the Kildar military adventure series by John Ringo and Ryan Sears.  Sequel to Ghost, Kildar, Choosers of the Slain and Unto the Breach

A new addition to the Paladin of Shadows military adventure series by multiple New York Times best seller John Ringo and Ryan Sears.  Sequel to Ghost, Kildar, Choosers of the Slain, Unto the Breach and A Deeper Blue.

After saving America from Middle Eastern terrorists, even Mike Harmon and the Keldara could use a vacation. Of course, the Kildar’s idea of a vacation includes taking down pirates in the Singapore Straits. But when he finds computer chips designed to run nuclear reactors in the pirate booty, Harmon has a new mission thrust upon him–discover how bottom-feeding thieves got their hands on top-secret technology.

The chips are headed for newly democratic Myanmar, a country vital to American interests in the region.  Now Harmon finds himself in a desperate race to learn who stole the chips and why.  From glittering Hong Kong to the slums of Thailand to the swamps of Myanmar, Harmon and his Keldara team follow a trail of death and deceit across the glittering underbelly of Southeast Asia.

And as the path winds through dark jungle and slave labor camps to the heart of newborn democracy, Harmon must devise a way to prevent the nasty overthrow of a nation’s capital by totalitarian tyrants.  But if there’s one thing Mike and the Keldara specialize in, it’s doing what it takes to give freedom a chance.

About the Author

John Ringo began writing for Baen in 2000 with his first release A Hymn Before Battle—the first novel in his Posleen Wars—which has become a New York Times best-selling series with over one million copies in print. The series continued with Gust Front, When the Devil Dances, Hell’s Faire and Eye of the Storm. In addition, Ringo has penned the Council War series: There Will be Dragons, Emerald Sea, Against the Tide, and East of the Sun, West of the Moon. Adding another dimension to his skills, Ringo created nationally best-selling techno-thriller novels about Mike Harmon (Ghost, Kildar, Choosers of the Slain, Unto the Breach, and A Deeper Blue). His latest techno-thriller, The Last Centurion, was also a national best seller. A more playful twist on the future is found in novels of the Looking-Glass series: Into the Looking Glass, Vorpal Blade, Manxome Foe and Claws That Catch, the last three in collaboration with Travis S. Taylor. His audience was further enhanced with four collaborations with fellow New York Times best-selling author David Weber: March Upcountry, March to the Sea, March to the Stars and We Few. There are an additional five collaborative spinoffs from the Posleen series: The Hero, written with Michael Z. Williamson, Watch on the Rhine, Yellow Eyes and The Tuloriad, all written with Tom Kratman, and the New York Times best seller Cally’s War and its sequels Sister Time and Honor of the Clan, both with Julie Cochrane. A veteran of the 82nd Airborne, he brings first-hand knowledge of military operations to his fiction.

3.0 out of 5 stars Not Ringo's best but still worth buying Jan 8 2013
Format:Hardcover|Amazon Verified Purchase
As a big John Ringo fan, I've been looking forward to the sixth book in the Kildar series. I was a bit nervous buying the hard cover version because the Advance Reader's Copy (ARC) was given very negative reviews on the Baen website (Baen is the publisher). I bought it anyways on the hope that John would improve the book with the feedback given on the ARC, and it seems that he has. The book continues the adventures of "Ghost" following the style of the first five books of the series- action, sex, rougher action, and rougher sex. The action is well done and what you'd expect from an action book. While previous books had some over the top scenes with the President of the US, Tiger by the Tail crosses into the unbelievable. Fortunately, the scenes are short and one can focus on the action. The sex is explicit with a heavy BDSM slant. Some very bad things happen to some of the women that are captured by both sides in this book... if you do not want to read about things like that, you should not buy the series. If you are a fan of the series, buy the book. While not as good as "Ghost" or "Kildar", "Tiger by the Tail" is not bad. It's clear the the co-author (Ryan Sear) has a way to grow as an author, but so did John Ringo when he was co-writing with David Weber. Some of the forums have called for John to dump Ryan but I think Ryan deserves another shot if John wants a co-author for the next book. Time and book seven will tell.

2.0 out of 5 stars Ringo's other books are great! Jan 2 2013

This book demonstrates how a 5-star author can still produce a 1-star book. I bought the e-Arc (electronic Advanced Reader Copy) the day it came out. I wish I'd bought the Honor Harrington book instead!!!!
EVERYTHING John Ringo writes is an automatic buy for me. DON"T BUY THIS BOOK!!! You will get the wrong impression of what John Ringo can do with words. Start with Ghost by John Ringo, then the rest of this series, please, to maximize your reading pleasure. Try anything else by Ringo and be prepared to be addicted to his writing. Buy Live Free or Die, The Hot Gate, and Citadel and you will read them 2 or 3 times the first year! Buy The Last Centurion and you will cheer! Buy Into the Looking Glass, Manxome Foe, Vorpal Blade, and Claws that Catch for way more value than the money spent! (Beware the CLICK) AND HE HAS EVEN MORE BOOKS WHEN YOU NEED MORE RINGO! But, hopefully, no more like this one.

2.0 out of 5 stars Big Dissapointment Dec 27 2012
By Gordon S. Groff - Published on Amazon.com

I hate to write this, as I am a serious Ringo fan and want him to get fabulously wealthy for his efforts that have given me so many hours of reading enjoyment. I just LOVE his work, and the Paladin of the Shadows series is on my all-time fav list. Ghost and Kildar easily rank 5 stars IMO. This one, however, is NOT representative of Mr. Ringo's work! It is also NOT representative of the Paladin series! The characters are all totally out-of-character and it's written like a parody of the other works in the series.

I've never given a 2 star review before, as I prefer to not say anything if I can't say anything good, but wanted to warn any new potential fans out there to NOT take this as representative of this author's work!

I will continue to buy anything under the Ringo name, but this is a warning to anyone who gets this one - do NOT judge this book by the John Ringo cover! It's obviously written by the co-author, who I hope to not hear anything from in the future.

I fervently hope that this does not cause the series to languish, but that we can look forward to further battles of the forces of evil with Mike Harmon and his faithful retainers. The whole world can sleep easier knowing that the Kildar is on the job!

2.0 out of 5 stars A Middling Adventure Jan 1 2013
By C. Sapp - Published on Amazon.com

This is a John Ringo book similar to recent works by Tom Clancy. Sure, the name is on the cover, but you have to wonder if there was actually any direct input by the original author.

I went back and re-read through the Paladin of Shadows series in preparation for this book. After a five year absence, I was eager to dive back into the world of the Ghost. This book, however, leaves me with decidedly mixed feelings, especially since the old books were so fresh in my mind.

The old characters are stilted, and feel like parodies of themselves, several times doing things that were so far out of character that I had to go back an re-read the names. One incident in particular comes to mind, when one of the central characters that has been around since Kildar (Paladin of Shadows Book 2) uses an old nickname for someone that has never once before been used.
On the other hand, the new characters are bland and uninventive, as if the writer took the established tropes of the Keldara as "beautiful" and "highly skilled" and left it at that, with few personality quirks that make the reader care about these people.

The plot is what saves this boat from completely capsizing. It's a fine techno-thriller, especially since the old tropes of saving the world from rogue nukes can start to wear thin. It's nice to see something else equally dangerous but less often used take the spotlight. But it doesn't have that extra Ringo magic that turns it into a first-class roller coaster ride.

Who is this Ryan Sear? What has he written in the past that qualifies him to step in and take the reins on such a beloved series? A quick search on the Baen website only shows this one book under his author credits, and any deeper digging turns up very little. What happened to great co-authors like David Weber or Travis S. Taylor? Sure, they have their own careers to think about, but if the only other option is this poor fan-fiction quality imitation, I'd rather have waited another five years.

A misstep by Mr. Ringo, to be sure. I can only hope that he will learn from his mistakes in handing off one of his most prized creations to an amateur so that one day the Ghost may rise again.
