How do you follow a debut record that achieved out-of-the-blue grandeur on its way to selling a quarter of a million copies? For Maine’s Ray LaMontagne, it’s all about shaking up the formula, evading repetition and delivering the unexpected. Till the Sun Turns Black finds the introspective singer/songwriter complementing his folk-country ways with traces of strings and horns and spooky soulful background voices. Songs like "You Can Bring Me Flowers" and "Three More Days" are the most R&B-influenced, the latter shuffling about ala The Band or Tony Joe White. Despite its brooding lyrics, "Empty" has a rollicking, almost breezy delivery, a perfect balance to either the hushed title track, the unnerving “Be Here Now” or the horn-fortified waltz, "Gone Away From Me." Throughout the 11-song sequence, and especially on the final song "Within You," LaMontagne’s voice remains the record’s most crucial element, as vibrant as it is tattered and as harsh as it is flawless. --Scott Holter

Product Description

Ray LaMontagne's new CD, Till The Sun Turns Black, is a deeply personal and profoundly introspective piece of work. There's no doubt the 300,000+ fans who fell in love with Ray after hearing his critically acclaimed 2004 debut, Trouble, will love this new collection of music. At the same time, "Till The Sun Turns Black," Ray's second collaboration with celebrated producer Ethan Johns, marks a daring push beyond the acoustic roots of his first CD, and into more complex and diverse styles, textures and arrangements.

5.0 out of 5 stars A revelation Oct 13 2006
Format:Audio CD
After hearing the first 10 seconds of "three more days" on the radio I knew I just made my greates musical discovery of the last 5 years. (Of course, I knew "trouble" but I never knew the artist) I ordered all three of his albums and could not have imaged the sheer genius of these recordings. The song Empty brought tears to my eyes, yet minutes later I found myself completely transformed by whatever the mood of the song I'm listening to is. This music has incredible directness, intensity and sincererty yet is extremely "listenable". This is an emotional rollercoaster you somehow cannot get enough of. Why this guy is not all over the radio and charts like say John Mayer (who I like a great deal as well. don't get me wrong), beats me. May be we're running out of melancholics.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely Brilliant! Oct 7 2006
By KD
Format:Audio CD
Having not removed Trouble (Ray's first album) from my CD player for at least 3 months after purchasing it, I was quite certain at the time that it was the best Ray Lamontagne could offer his listeners. Certainly there was no way he could produce another album that could even come close to Trouble. So, when I first unwrapped Til The Sun Turns Black, put it in my CD player and pressed play, I was not expecting to be blown away or to be disappointed. It was supposed to be an album I would listen to a couple of times at most, and then store it in my CD library, only visiting it once in a while to listen to a song here and there, like I do with so many other CD's I purchase.

This did not happen. Song after song, I found myself wondering how it was possible to produce two consecutive albums of this quality. The structural, vocal, and lyrical beauty of this album is beyond words. No description can do it justice.

I assure you that if you are looking for music of the highest quality, look no further! This is it!
