Additional Features

Though there are 1.33:1 versions available, this director approved Criterion DVD beautifully presents Time Bandits in the film's intended 1:85:1 theatrical ratio. Time Bandits was originally shot full screen (aspect ratio 1.33:1) with the intention of it being cropped to fit a widescreen format. Though non-anamorphic, Time Bandits looks very crisp with well-balanced colors and nice contrasts. The Dolby Digital 2.0 Surround audio sounds very acceptable with no obvious flaws. With regards to extras, there is a "hands-off" Time Bandits scrapbook that is fairly interesting. But what really sets this DVD apart is the stellar audio commentary by director Terry Gilliam, cowriter/actor Michael Palin, and actors John Cleese, David Warner, and Craig Warnock ("Kevin"). Gilliam and Warnock provide most of the commentary providing interesting anecdotes and amusing tales of behind-the-scenes shenanigans. These detailed tidbits of information are a "must have" for fans. --Rob Bracco

Review

Terry Gilliam's 1981 children's fantasy film is a curious mixture of adventure, farce, and satire that is intermittently entertaining -- if occasionally eccentric to a fault. With a camera perched at knee level, Time Bandits is told from a child's point-of-view, but rather than adopting a sickeningly sweet sentimentality, Gilliam opts for an acerbic and often nasty tone that risked offending the very audience at which it purported to be aimed. The script's indebtedness to childrens' author Roald Dahl can be seen most obviously in the relationship between the main character and his parents, particularly in the amusingly explosive conclusion. Gilliam's state-of-the-art special effects are used, ironically enough, to attack a consumer society infatuated with the latest in technological advances -- a theme he would develop more convincingly in his next (and arguably best) film, Brazil. The dozen-or-so high profile cameos are not always effectively blended into the time-tripping storyline, but when they are, Gilliam's film takes on aspects of both the surreal and existential. David Warner is the most interesting of the adult-sized performers; his devilish charms are incessantly irresistible. ~ Dan Jardine, All Movie Guide

3.0étoiles sur 5 an interesting film for older mature children., Avril 12 2004

This review is from: Time Bandits (Widescreen) (DVD)
This review is for the Criterion Collection DVD edition of the film.

This film was marketed as being for children. I thought that this film is too morbid for small children and recommend that children be at least 8 years old to watch it.

In this film, a young boy joins a troupe of dwarves who travel through 'holes' in time with the aid of a time map stolen from a deity. They rob famous historical figures such as Napoleon and Agamemnon. Later they are captured by an evil sorceror who takes the map from them.

This film has several creatures in it that I think would frighten younger children I urge parents to watch the film by themselves before showing it to their children.

The Criterion Collection has special features including a theatrical trailer, a slide show of production photos and a video, and full-length audio commentary by selected cast & crew.

5.0étoiles sur 5 A modern classic for the whole family., Juil 26 2009

No childhood is complete without a copy of this in your DVD library.

A time-hopping adventure from a highly intelligent young boy's point of view, but this is no childish tale. Very much in tune with the original Brothers Grim stories, Time Bandits enjoys its share of "little people," giants, ogres, heroes, and villains. There is no "gratuitous" violence, all the violence has a purpose - to illustrate how absurd life is and how fleeting it can be.

For Sean Connery fans, you get to see him in all his glory as King Agamemnon. Monte Python's John Cleese reprises the role of Robin Hood as never seen before (Prince Philip, eat your heart out.) Michael Palin and Shelly Duvall play recurring roles as lovers Vincent & Pansy in different eras, with hilarious results. Other major players include: Ian Holm as Napoleon, Ralph Richardson as "the Supreme Being" (aka God), and David Warner as "Evil."

Terry Gilliam's directing, story construction, and sets are so rich that you have to watch Time Bandits several times to really "see" everything therein. If you've seen it before, you need to see it again, and if you haven't seen it yet - what are you waiting for?

4.0étoiles sur 5 A Concept Film that Doesn't Know When to Quit, Jui 3 2004
This review is from: Time Bandits (Widescreen) (DVD)
Like a big candy bar. Eye-popping but unfulfilling. Momentarily pleasing but undernourishing. Couldn't help but think this could have been so much better. It's kind of a Monty Python reimagining of The Wizard of Oz. More mature and cleverer. A plucky resourceful child is transported to a parallel world where the child must make things right before he/she is allowed to go home. The Munchkins are the stars this time. The Supreme Being is, of course, Oz. Evil is the Wicked Witch. Instead of the fantasy world sing-a-long; Gilliam goes with Sci-Fi time travel. Either the movie should have been longer to allow for more story & character development or some of the great ideas should have been shelved for other projects. There's a certain episodic feel to the proceedings as the time travelers jump from time to time but don't really get anywhere; much like the film itself.
