Book Description

Not everyone should be trusted...

Not all opportunity should be seized...

Sometimes the past is better left alone...

Private Investigator Darren Camponi gets the opportunity of a lifetime when he is hired to find an old classmate. After tracking him down, Camponi discovers he is working on a secret project: Time travel. After dealing with the federal government, Camponi decides to help his friend, only to be dragged into a conspiracy that goes from the FBI right down to the people around him.

After the death of a fellow P.I. and a suspicious malpractice suit against his father, Camponi enlists to help finish the research. His reward: a chance to revisit the past. Camponi has no idea what awaits him in his past, and is unaware of the betrayal he must face in the present. All he knows is that both of his lives will never be the same.

Combining the elements of suspense with cutting edge science fiction, Time Stand Still delivers edge of your seat thrills from the beginning, right up to its dramatic conclusion.

From the Publisher

From Bookbrowser.com:

John Misak has written a humorous and concentrated mystery with Time Stand Still. In this page-turning novel, Misak introduces PI, Darren Camponi, into an old genre adding to it a healthy spicing of humor and complimenting it with a clever, well thought out plot.

When a friend from a large, out-of-state PI agency contacts Darren Camponi, he is thankful for the opportunity to earn some extra money. The job seems simple. Find Jason, an old friend from high school. Why? Apparently Jason has stolen intellectual property from the university he worked for and the college wants the research back.

What starts out simple is complicated by the fact that not only does the institution want the project being worked on, but so does the FBI. The government agency is not happy to learn that Camponi is interfering with their investigation. The pressure is on when Camponi does not back off and those closest to him begin to pay for his stubbornness.

It seems like Jason’s time machine is important to many people for many obvious reasons. If it works … but Jason needs a volunteer to test the machine. And Camponi is the ideal candidate. A potentially paramount time. A dangerous time. Who can you trust?

Misak is the author of the acclaimed Soft Case. Time Stand Still is an entertaining and enjoyable read. Great dialogue and tightly woven scenes make the story real and believable, a solid mystery with a thin layer of science fiction. Camponi reminds me of the kind of guy I’d like hanging out with. John Misak is onto something with this character. I’d love to see more of him.

2.0 out of 5 stars At times interesting..., Jan 13 2004

This review is from: Time Stand Still (Paperback)
Time Stand Still was OK, but just that, OK. At times it comes across very amateurish with included details that had nothing to do with the story and seem to be have been included strictly as filler. I found the numerous typos very distracting and could have easily been handled by better editing. There is no real hard science here, unless the use of the term "quantum computer" constitutes science. One goes through two-thirds into the book before any time traveling takes place, but the mix of detective work and time travel was an interesting twist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth The Time: Time Stand Still by John Misak, Dec 12 2003

This review is from: Time Stand Still (Paperback)
Private Investigator Darren Camponi is barely hanging on business wise and he could use some decent paying clients. His love life is going down in flames yet again and his mother wants to know why he keeps missing the mandatory Sunday dinner. But all that and other personal problems pale in comparison when he gets himself involved in a missing person's case of strange proportions.

The missing person is Jason Caulfield according to Mike Holmes who runs his own investigative company. Jason may have come home to his parent's house and since Darren is the nearest to Jason's home, Mike is requesting Darren's help in locating Jason and will pass on part of his fee for Darren's help. In a strange coincidence, Darren knew Jason years ago as an often picked upon nerd in High School. Mike claims not to have known this fact and other details of the case just don't sound right to Darren.

But, Mike has never misled him before and that along with the promise of decent money for what should be a simple enough deal, convinces Darren to take the case and assist. The case becomes steadily more difficult and complicated as Darren learns that Mike wasn't telling him everything and that other forces are serious about recovering Jason and his knowledge one way or the other. Apparently, Jason was working on the concept of time travel and may have found a way to make it happen but Jason needs help. As the body count climbs, Darren begins to identify some of the players but with knowledge of them, they also learn of him and retaliation comes in an unexpected ways.

While overall enjoyable, the major problem with this novel is the extremely anticlimactic ending. After working through, at times overwritten dialogue and narration in the 320-page novel, the ending was very disappointing and weak. This ending is not the "bang" ending one would have expected and weakens the overall enjoyment of what had been a fairly interesting, enjoyable novel. Despite that fact, this novel does feature good writing, pacing, interesting ideas and strong character development. It just needs a better ending.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Surefire Winner, Dec 9 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Time Stand Still (Paperback)
I found this book through the 'Recommend an Item' feature and was hesitant about getting it. I'd never heard of John Misak before. I am happy I took a chance.

Time Stand Still really interested me from the first page, something I find is hard to do these days. The writer seems to know what he is doing by pulling you in and toying with you throughout the novel. The story was excellent and the telling of it even better.

I've read some of the negative views here, and I have to say I don't agree. I guess it all depends on what you are looking to get out of a book. This one is exciting, humorous, and ultimately enjoyable.

I highly recommend this for anyone who takes reading seriously.
