Review

"If you have kids who love Harry Potter and are constantly casting about for similar books to read, [The Time Travelers] might be just the ticket."

-- Entertainment Weekly.com

"Buckley-Archer may very well give J. K. Rowling a run for her money. This wonderfully rich and complex novel, written in lyrical and vivid language, is destined to be a classic....History interweaves with science, social issues in both centuries are thrown in; yet what readers will remember most is a fast-paced plot with a cliff-hanger ending....A rare gem."

-- School Library Journal, starred review

"Buckley-Archer spins a rip-roaring tale replete with the raw details of life in the 18th century...nonstop action, appealing secondary characters, and healthy dollops of humor, all of which will have readers panting for the sequel."

-- Kirkus Reviews

"May very well give J. K. Rowling a run for her money."

Product Description

What happens when a seventeenth-century bad guy has twenty-first-century technology?

An accident with an antigravity machine catapulted Peter Schock and Kate Dyer back to 1763. A bungled rescue attempt leaves Peter stranded in the eighteenth century while a terrifying villain, the Tar Man, takes his place and explodes onto twenty-first-century London. Concerned about the potentially catastrophic effects of time travel, the NASA scientists responsible for the situation question whether it is right to rescue Peter. Kate decides to take matters into her own hands, but things don't go as planned. Soon the physical effects of time travel begin to have a disturbing effect on her. Meanwhile, in our century, the Tar Man wreaks havoc in a city whose police force is powerless to stop him.Set against a backdrop of contemporary London and revolutionary France, The Time Thief is the sequel to the acclaimed The Time Travelers.

5.0 out of 5 stars This series continues brilliantly!, Feb 27 2008
By J. S. Willis "Quick Tidal" (Toronto, ON) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
After having picked up "The Time Travelers" (previously Gideon Seymour, Cutpurse & Gentleman, and the first book in this series) on a whim last Wednesday, and voraciously devouring every last drop of it in a matter of two days, I sped right out to the store and bought my own fresh new hardcover copy of this, the second book in the series.

If the first book introduced me to the characters, and presented the situation in a deft and caring manner, then the second served only to heighten my enjoyment of this story. The characters are already so well developed by the end of the first novel that I felt pangs of emotion for their plight, both happiness and sadness. The second book not only continues with this heartfelt delivery of the characters various stories, but also throws some very interesting, and scientific curves into the fray. Even a villain such as The Tar Man, is cast into a light where I was at once sympathetic to him, whilst also knowing he is bad. This is of course making him into a sort of anti-hero. He is causing mass chaos, but there is a charm about him that I find hard not to like. "Never try to hoodwink a hoowinker" indeed! While the Tar Man has one side of center stage in this book, Kate and Mr. Schock take the other side of center stage, albeit in 1792 England and France and hold their own quite well. I'd rather not give away too much plot though, so I'll not say too much.

The story here races along at the same lightning-quick pace that the first book does. Nothing is lost in this second volume. Whereas other authors have been known to present a long boring patch in the middle of the center volume of a trilogy, Buckley-Archer does not. She tells us the story as it needs to be told and misses no beats. Not once did I think that anything happening was boring or tacked on.

Brilliance on the scale of, and most definitely on par with J.K. Rowlings Harry Potter series. The memorable characters, the ingenious plot devices, and the fantastically realized settings, of both the past and the present, all lead to one of the better books I have as yet read in a while.

The only issue I'd bring up is the near absence of our dear Mr. Gideon Seymour, who is only in a smattering of chapters in this book (and there is ample reason as to why.....or rather, when), but that is no fault of the author, but of the story that must be told how it must be told, and I for one will anxiously await the 3rd and final installment with excitement!

Bravo Mrs. Buckley-Archer!
