Book Description

Sept. 17 2013

For ten years, listeners of The Vinyl Cafe have shared their personal stories with Stuart McLean on The Vinyl Cafe Story Exchange. To celebrate the tenth anniversary of the segment, Stuart and his long-time radio producer, Jess Milton, have collected their favourites. The result is a wise, wonderful anthology of stories about rituals and romance, road trips and guitar licks, Saturday-night hockey games and Sunday morning pancakes. A story about an exploding outhouse sits right beside one about a lost love because that's just what happens in life. Sad things are all tangled up with funny things and sweet things, too.

The voices in these stories are private and personal. Reading this collection is like joining a dinner party hosted by Stuart himself.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stories of Canadian Life March 6 2014
Much as I love Stuart McLean?s own stories, it was wonderful to read this collection of reflections from all over Canada. Listeners were asked to write a story about a moment in time they had experienced. The only two criteria were (1) it had to be true and (2) it had to be short. This collection brings together the best stories from the ten years the Story Exchange segment has been running on the Vinyl Cafe. Some of the stories are cute, some are funny, some are poignant, but all of them evoke emotions in the reader and leave you wanting to read the next one. And because they?re short, you can read as many or as few of the stories as you have time for in your busy day.

5.0 out of 5 stars Among the most enjoyable of all anthologies March 1 2014
Format:Hardcover|Verified Purchase
This book is not written by celebrated Canadian author Stuart McLean, but he compiled the stories from the host of tales that his fans sent in to Mr. McLean for a segment of his radio show: "Time Now for the Vinyl Café Story Exchange." The stories are required to be brief and true. As a result, all the stories are an average of two to three pages in length, and some are merely a single page.

The stories are funny, too. Think of this book as "Chicken Soup for the Literary-Minded Person's Soul."

Currently, the hard-cover version is all that is available in print, but a paperback version will be available in the fall of 2014. it makes a great gift or a great bathroom reader. It's also a plus for those who enjoy reading in bed just before lights-out or for those who, like me, prefer full stories that can be read in a single sitting, no matter where you might sit.
