Barry McGuire while at law school, had his first opportunity to invest in real estate. He had a friend who seemed to be buying every house near the University of Alberta, renting it out and building a real estate empire. McGuire was a student and needed a place to stay while going to law school, so he used his student loan for the down payment and quickly found five other students who also needed a place to stay.
