Yes, it's true: you can virtually see Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall falling for each other in this Howard Hawks variation on Casablanca but adapted from--as legend has it--Ernest Hemingway's self-declared "worst novel." (The story goes that Hawks told Hemingway he could make a movie of the author's least work, and Hemingway gave him the rights to this story.) The script by William Faulkner and Jules Furthman actually makes this one of Hawks's and Bogart's most interesting and often exciting films. Bogart plays a boat captain who reluctantly agrees to help the French Resistance while wooing chanteuse Bacall. Hoagy Carmichael, wry at the piano, adds a delicious accent to an already wonderful mood. --Tom Keogh

Product Description

Help the Free French? Not world-weary gunrunner Harry Morgan (Humphrey Bogart). But he changes his mind when a sultry siren-in-distress named Marie asks, "Anybody got a match?" That red-hot match is Bogart and 19-year-old first-time film actress Lauren Bacall. Full of intrigue and racy banter (including Bacall's legendary whistling instructions), this thriller excites further interest for what it has and has not. Cannily directed by Howard Hawks and smartly written by William Faulkner and Jules Furthman, it doesn't have much similarity to the Ernest Hemingway novel that inspired it. And it strongly resembles Casablanca: French resistance fighters, a piano-playing bluesman (Hoagy Carmichael) and a Martinique bar much like Rick's Cafe Americaine. But first and foremost, it showcases Bogart and Bacall, carrying on with a passion that smolders from the tips of their cigarettes clear through to their souls.

4.0 out of 5 stars An era remembered - with pleasure Oct 30 2009
Format:DVD
Personally, I find myself annoyed when Reviewers comment adversely about the quality of 'old' movies. This isn't to deny that the quality - generally - isn't up to current standards - BUT, neither was the original print! The technology involved in film-making has improved immeasurably over the years.

Bogie and Bacall worked - together - mainly in the 40's and early 50's - even the first run of their movies was to see blotches, scratches and streaks etc., on the screen. It is hardly surprising that modern copies are not 100% perfect.

Considering everything, the standards, I find, are quite acceptable. The big thing is that the performances of the actors - when dealing with people like Bogie and Bacall - is superlative in every way. Today, in many cases, films become famous for spectacular 'effects' and other 'tricks'. In the (Good) Old Days, actors HAD to act for the film to be noticed above the 'crowd'.

Bogie and Bacall were consummate actors and these films showed their talents to advantage. While they excelled in Key Largo, To Have & Have Not, and the Big Sleep - ALL EXCEPTIONALLY GOOD MOVIES - even Bogie and Bacall couldn't completely overcome the puerile script of Dark Passage - although they gave it a good try!

All in all, great entertainment!

5.0 out of 5 stars Wonderful Bogart-Bacall classic May 23 2013
Format:DVD
Best remembered as the film which showed Bogart and Bacall falling in love on screen, To Have and Have Not deserves its reputation as a classic for its own merits. Great director Howard Hawks, as usual, uses a set of relationships to explore moral values. In this case, the relationships are between Humphrey Bogart as a deep-sea fishing boat captain in Vichy-controlled Martinique, who is approached by the Free French for help in their resistance, Walter Brennan, as Bogart's alcoholic sidekick, and Lauren Bacall as a femme fatale working her way from port to port: what's explored is the moral paradox that in order to keep your independence, you have to accept responsibility for others. Very loosely based on what Hawks and Hemingway reportedly agreed was Hemingway's worst novel, the film also features Hoagy Carmichael as a saloon pianist, and introduced his song "Baltimore Oriole," which becomes a sort of sound track Leitmotif. A hugely entertaining film with great lines, terrific atmosphere and a serious undercurrent, recommended for all. The 2003 Warner Home Video DVD, on which this review is based, is a very good transfer.
