4.0 out of 5 stars Not challenging, but utterly enjoyable and summery., Jun 2 2010
By
hal st soul (between London and Los Angeles) - See all my reviews
This review is from: To the Sea (Audio CD)
"To The Sea" is Jack Johnson's fifth solo studio album.
Recorded at Jack's two solar-powered studios in Hawaii and Los Angeles, the sun really does shine through on this one.
His sound seems to have found favour across the globe with his surf-inspired melodies and lyrics: with him you know pretty much what you're going to get - soothing, acoustic based songs that accompany you through life like a close friend.
On "To The Sea", there are no big breaks with the past. It isn't a whole lot different from the Hawaii-born musician's previous outings, (though it's more cheerful than his last album) and certainly no showing off, just that rich, likeable voice, simple acoustic vibes and songs that let the fresh air blow through.
His status as a household name will be undoubtedly reinforced by this well-nigh perfect example of all his best traits.
"To the Sea" was recorded in just three weeks, partly live -- Johnson claims this is how he works best. "We're a pretty small band, with pretty simple songs", he claims, shrugging off the fact that his last album went to No'1 both in US and Britain.
"Like waves in his beloved surf, Johnson's songs tend to come and go without leaving much individual trace. His lyrics are scrupulously non-specific, but one guesses that his latest album pays tribute to his surfer father Jeff, who introduced Johnson to maritime pleasures, and who died last August. As ever, the results are perfectly nice, with no unsettling emotions to trouble the water. - K.Fox
"However, while it's refreshing to hear a superstar relaxing, this horizontal attitude also means there has been very little creative progress made since his 2001 debut.
He's still singing breezy tunes about the water on the title track and "Only the Ocean", still getting soppy about his family on "My Little Girl". - David Smyth
Jack Johnson's albums only really work in the summer. The Hawaiian singer-songwriter gives every impression that his life is one permanent beach barbecue: while his last album Sleep Through The Static showed him occasionally trying his hand at broodiness, here the party has begun again.
The album has one gear: is tuneful, mellow and warm with a lovely soulful, solar power - quite literally, as this has been recorded with 100% solar energy.
The only danger is that his style is so relaxed that the message often gets lost in the warmth of it all.
All in all, the album is not challenging, but is very enjoyable and impossible to dislike, because Johnson treads lightly with his sunniness. He just lies in a metaphorical hammock and offers nuggets of wisdom, which sound deceptively meaningful, when illuminated by his pretty guitar work and the album's feel-good vibes.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Definative Jack Johnson Album, Jun 4 2010

This is what I call Jack Johnson at his best, and this is a mid album review. Gone are the repetitive rythmes and soft rockiness of his other albums, all replaced by songs that actually sound different. Also, they're more fast paced, but still soft. I must say, I am enjoying this album.
