4.0 out of 5 stars Fairly entertaining and a solid sequal to the original, May 6 2011
This review is from: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Combat Ops (Mass Market Paperback)
All told, this book is a solid sequal to the original Ghost Recon. The writing style change drastically from the first novel in that it's now in a first-person narrative, as Captain Scott Mitchell (the protagonist), facing court martial, recounts recent events in Afghanistan with his covert Special Forces team, the Ghosts, to his legal counsel. The book also has a lot more political narrative and moral/ethical dilemmas than the predecessor instead of focusing mainly on 'boots-on-the-ground' mission planning and action which keeps the book from being too action-heavy. There's also call outs and continuity nods to other Tom Clancy franchises (End War for example). All told, if you've enjoyed other books based on the Tom Clancy games by David Michaels, you should enjoy this one as well.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Scary, Gritty sequel of Ghost Recon, April 12 2011

This review is from: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Combat Ops (Mass Market Paperback)
Although, I haven't finished Combat Ops yet, but I got a feel of what's to come. This sequel is the best in my opinion, the first person thoughts of Scott Mitchell. The story involves Mitchell and his Ghost team in Afghanistan, and the are on the hunt for a terrorist who is big in the area.

The story definitely potrays, in my opinion, the chaos, confusion and incompetence of the war in Afghanistan today. I feel that it is done well. The utter chaos that Mitchell goes through is well done, the characters are excellent.

It's a very intense thriller of war and it's a definate must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clancy with brains as well as testosterone!, May 3 2011
By Dagrumpsta - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Combat Ops (Mass Market Paperback)
Mission conflict: Two crack army teams operate out of the same compound near Kandahar in southern Afghanistan. One team builds; the other team kills!

Captain Harruck's team is there to win the hearts and minds of the locals. Captain Mitchell and his Ghost Recon team is there to assassinate Mullah Mohammed Zahed, the vicious Zhari district Taliban commander, and overlord of Sangsar. But, intimidation aside, the locals seem to prefer Zahed over the legitimate Afghan government.

Many of the situations Harruck and Mitchell encounter (how the U.S. army pays the Taliban for logistics support and those infamous Poppy Palaces) are right out of current newspaper articles and various white paper reports. The treatment of women as chattel is played out right down to its tragic consequences.

Through Mitchell's eyes we follow two young army captains as they confront these issues, discharge their duties, and narrowly avoid killing each other.

From Clancy I expect action and there's plenty of it here. But there's no denying this is a dark, provocative study, a thinking person's plot, and perhaps even an important story.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Good Tie of Drama and Action, April 18 2011
By SpeckledEagle - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Combat Ops (Mass Market Paperback)
Combat Ops is first of all a great book, just like the first Ghost Recon.

Scott Mitchell and his team is sent to Afghanistan to capture an infamous terrorist in Taliban controlled Afghanistan. While trying to convince locals to trust the Army over the Taliban, the Ghost Team has to deal with pacifists, traitors and over the top aggression. No one, friendly or not, is safe from the Taliban, and event he Ghosts themselves.

One of the first times Grant Blackwood can tie together drama and action in a very enjoyable novel.
