Album Description

Who wouldn't admire a band like Unicorn, a quintessentially English folk-rock act that just happened to have collided with a love for American country rock, and wound up creating a hybrid that still sounds remarkable today? Widely regarded as Unicorn's finest album (a horrible disservice to the previous "Blue Pine Trees" but no matter), Too Many Crooks opens with the near-frenetic energy of "Weekend," and continues on through a greater number of rockers than either of its predecessors. It's a double-edged sword; the power of the band's earlier albums was their ability to turn up the heat without increasing the volume. But moments like the semi-protracted fade of "Ferry Boat," and the almost-funky flirting of "Disco Dancer" are certainly audience-pleasers in waiting, while "No Way Out of Here" impressed producer David Gilmour of Pink Floyd so much that he covered it for inclusion on his first solo album. Remastered in 2009, with a bonus B-side added to the fun, Too Many Crooks is a great album. But really, you could say that for everything Unicorn ever did. (From 1976)

5.0 out of 5 stars Rockin' with Rockpile, Nov 10 2004

This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Any fan of Dave Edmonds or Nick Lowe or Rockpile (what they called themselves when they toured) must get this album. Carter is a very good singer, the songs are a great blend of rock and country, and the songs are very good. I can't say enough about this CD.

4.0 out of 5 stars Vintage 1978, Nov 4 2010

This is an exciting find for fans of 70s rock or just really good rock in general. The rhythms are solid, smooth, very intelligent and a tad funky in a slightly country-ish way that reminded me of early Yes on a few of the tracks, Eagles, Joe Walsh, Grateful Dead even, but only occasionally - overall the bands best tracks are distinct. The first two numbers "Weekend" and "Ferryboat" are hot and if they don't get you on first listen, they will on the second. "No Way Out of Here" is one I'd heard before. "In the Mood" was the original closer and it's a great tune. There's a lot of good tunes even between those that I've come to like more every time I listen it.

The band is tight but the rhythms they create are spacious and they like to change up times within many of the songs. The Japanese edition I have sounds just great. There is no doubt that some of the songs here are sublime although there are a few that may be just very good. By all means though this Unicorn album is well worth a purchase. It's excellent, and I'm beginning to wonder why I didn't give it 5 stars. Oh well, 4 will leave room to be impressed.

There seems to be an extra track on the Japan mini-sleeve edition (11 tracks instead of the ten listed on the sleeve). For another great find of similar era and also in this same mini-sleeve edition check out the excellent Ace album "Five-a-Side" (1974).

this cd is just o.k. bullseye bill is the best song on it .no way out of here is good too. this band was rock band but could also do slow songs too. no way out of here is a slow song and it is good. the vocals are good and lyrics are good. i have not heard of any other songs on this cd. and i really did not care for the others. bullseye bill is a good song. more rock with a little country influence on it.
