Product Description

Consistently voted the number one ski resort in North America, Whistler--situated at the top of a narrow pass in the Coast Mountains 120 kilometres from Vancouver--sees two million visitors each year, even though the town itself only boasts a full-time population of 10,000. World attention has been increasingly focused on Whistler since 2003, when it was chosen to host the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games.

Top of the Pass: Whistler and the Sea-to-Sky Country is the incredible story of how a cluster of modest log cabins called Alta Lake mushroomed into the glamorous year-round recreation mecca known as Whistler. Stephen Vogler gives a rare glimpse of a mountain community and the lifestyles of its locals and visitors. Brimming with stunning colour photographs by Toshi Kawano and Bonny Makarewicz, this spectacular coffee-table book shows why Whistler is one of the most visited destinations in Canada.

About the Author

Stephen Vogler has written for national publications such as The Globe and Mail and Explore Magazine as well as for CBC Radio's Ideas, DNTO and Outfront programs and he is the author of Whistler Features, Top of the Pass: Whistler and the Sea-to-Sky Country. Vogler moved to Whistler as a child in 1976 and now raises his own family there.

Toshi Kawano was born in Japan in 1969. He has been working as a professional photographer since 1997 and his work has appeared in ski, snowboard, car and lifestyles magazines. In 2005, he was one of the main photographers for a Tourism Whistler promotion with Bonny Makarewicz, and was a main photographer for Tourism BC both winter and summer '05 and '06. Toshi has had photo exhibitions presented by Canon in Japan and Whistler.

Bonny Makarewicz has been a photojournalist for two decades. She has documented Whistler's growth and its personality, from the sports heroes on the hills to world leaders who come to work and play at the resorts. She captures the spirit of the community in her portrait shots and her commercial photography--from world-class skiing and snowboarding to royal visits. Bonnie has won numerous national and provincial awards.
