Review

"Tori by Design. . . has all the elements needed to appeal to female teens. . . "  -The Winnipeg Free Press

". . . the important part of this story is the believability of its characters and the accurate portrait of New York and life in the metropolis." - Resource Links

From the Back Cover

Tori Edwards jumps at the chance to move from Winnipeg to New York City with her family. After all, NYC is the place to be for an aspiring fashion designer, and her new high school has access to a placement program with FIT—the Fashion Institute of Technology. Life is fuller and more chaotic than she imagined, but she hangs on between boy—troubles, portfolio—building, and struggling to find perfect accessories. Then, just as it looks like Tori might achieve all she has dreamed, shocking news from her parents unravels her carefully designed plans and she is forced to look beyond the pages of a fashion magazine for answers.

I bought this book for my classroom and the girls loved it so much, I read it (loved it) and then bought it for my 13-year old niece. She LOVED it and stayed up all night to finish it.

The story is about Tori, a 15-year old who wants to be a fashion designer. Her family moves to New York City for her father's work, but also so she can pursue her dream. This book isn't a fluffy read. Tori's family experiences some problems and Tori is forced to choose between doing what she wants and what is right.

The part of the book that I liked best was the description of New York City, it almost became a character of its own, and the humour. The book is written from Tori's perspective, which is why so many of my female students enjoyed it.

I highly recommend this book for girls ages 12-15.

Great book! Aug. 2 2011

Format: Paperback
I'm a junior high school teacher and know my students will love this book. Fast-paced and fun, the writer makes New York City come alive. The main character wants to be a fashion designer and even though things get in her way, she stays focused on following her dream. Family drama gives the book an emotional edge as Tori tries to find her way in New York, both literally and figuratively. I would recommend this book to girls ages 10-15. Enjoy!
