Product Description

From Library Journal

"A combination of self-reactive autoimmune conditions and ...the surplus of chemical toxins ...initiate severe, systemic consequences in silicone-implanted women." So Stott-Kendall claims in this disturbing account of her own personal experience with silicone implants. Her contention is well buttressed with exhaustive notes. There has been a spate of books on the now-banned silicone breast implants (Frank Vasey and Josh Feldstein's The Silicone Breast Implant Controversy, LJ 11/15/93), but the saline implants currently in use and many other medical devices are encased in silicone, which has been shown to degrade and migrate. Though Stott-Kendall's prose is occasionally overdramatic, her premise is sound and her research impressive. This book belongs in every library.

From Booklist

Stott-Kendall, who had breast implants in 1980, suffered related illnesses and great pain not only until the explanation in 1985 but for eight years thereafter. During the entire 13 years, she also lost her husband (to please whom she had originally decided to have the implants), her home, her job, and most of the childhood of her two children. Hers is an appalling story of lack of interest, cover-ups, and denials by individuals, chemical companies, and governmental agencies. She spells out these developments in detail for her own case, and she discusses similarities in many others as well, in a text that is documented and cites the addresses of pertinent organizations and individuals to help those in similar predicaments, too. Dow Corning and Heyer-Schulte (now part of Baxter) have been the main corporate actors in the silicone controversy; Stott-Kendall dissects the former's highly publicized "global settlement" and shows how its monetary figures and coverages are exaggerated. All those interested in silicone-associated diseases will benefit from this book. William Beatty --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.
