Product Description

Many books have been created about graffiti; however, none cover the history of graffiti in the city of Toronto, Canada's largest urban capital. The city's pioneer artists share their stories, alongside images of their art. This is a rare and powerful book showcasing inspiring stories, realities and ideas that are rarely, if ever seen in the public realm. Anyone who picks up this beautiful historic and photographic journey will learn from its educational content. This includes legal sections, health and safety sections written specifically for artists as well as direct feedback from the artists themselves. The sociopolitical standpoints and importance of art in the lives of all citizens becomes an important message. Opinion pieces provide insight to the average reader on the longstanding debate of graffiti, while engaging a curiosity and appreciation for this incredibly complex and little understood genre. This 484-page book of photographs, stories, and histories showcases 1000+ photos which document 30 years of Graffiti in Toronto. They come from all over the city; from the back alleys in the Beach to storefronts of Kensington Market, beneath highway overpasses and bridges, on GO and TTC platforms and cars, Rosedale Valley, The Evergreen Brickworks, various buildings, both abandoned and inhabited, tables, chairs, desks, bathroom stalls and walls, trees, posts - just about everywhere. In addition to documenting the many images, Toronto Graffiti explores the legal, health and safety issues associated with the art. This includes interviews with 21 artists, health and safety professionals, community workers, lawyers, and opinion pieces from a variety of relevant sources. A must have for anyone interested in graffiti, freedom of expression and the history of graffiti in Toronto specifically.
