Farve or Data?,
By
This review is from: Total Recall 2070: The Complete Series (DVD)
Total Recall 2070 was a TV series based upon Philip K. Dick's short story "We Can Remember It for You Wholesale", and by his novel "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" [ filmed as "Total Recall" and "Blade Runner" the latter's visual style influencing the look of the series] which centered around human Citizen's Protection Agency detective David Hume [played by Michael Easton] and his new partner "flesh and plasma Alpha Android" Ian Farve [played by Karl Pruner]. The human/artificial detective duo idea may have first appeared in Isaac Asimov's dystopian novel "The Caves of Steel" with Elijah Baley and his robot partner, R. Daneel Olivaw in 1954, but the elements borrowed from Dick and Blade Runner ensure a very different story and atmosphere. However having said that, if you enjoyed any of the above then Total Recall 2070 will not disappoint you.The series combined dystopian science fiction and the police procedural drama, with sub-plots about the future society's structure, Hume's wife Olivia, the mystery of Farve's origin, and AI/Human relations. Many folk, myself amongst them, found Karl Pruner's Farve a more interesting, plausable, and realistic character than Brent Spiner's Data. Fans who remember the series will be glad it is finally available on DVD, but disappointed there are no extras such as interviews and commentaries, and I'm sorry to say the disabled are ignored by the absence of either sub-titles or audio description. The retention of the ad-break "bookends" was also slightly annoying. I agree with the previous reviewer that the end product of this release seems rushed, and as it has languished unreleased since the late 90's one is very disappointed a bit more thought and care was not put into the release. The only complaint I ever had about the series was (and still is) the re-use of establishment shots which is very noticeable when episodes are seen back to back. Total Recall 2070 was a very enjoyable show, and one of the better SF offerings of the 90's. It's good to see it again, and 1st timers like my son really enjoyed it too. This reasonably priced box set will not let you down as long as you remember it was canceled after it's 1st season so some plot threads remain unresolved.

Great show, it has more in common (like everyone else says) with Blade Runner than Total Recall, but oh well. It's a great show, give it a shot you won't be disapointed. Can't wait for it to finally be released on dvd. Now you just need all of Tekwar (the four movies, as well), Viper and a few other scifi tv show classics on dvd, then everyone will be happy.

Fantastic Series - Slightly Disappointed with the DVD Box Set,

This review is from: Total Recall 2070: The Complete Series (DVD)
Firstly, I just wanted to say that this is a really good box set to have, as it's such a great show and having all 22 episodes in one set is nice. However, I feel that Alliance actually rushed the creation of this, firstly the disk labels have a typo (for the episode Self-Inflicted, on the actual disk it's spelt Self Inicted) and secondly I would of liked to have seen some special features on the DVDs, seeing as we have waited 11 years for these to come out. Also, the back of the DVD cover says Full Frame (optimised for Widescreen displays) however, I am yet to see this "optimisation" :S Overall, worth buying, but as a big fan I was expecting more.
