The fascinating science behind our bodies and behaviors and how they link us to our ancient ancestors. What makes us human is cause for surprise. We retain some of the appearances and behaviors of our very ancient ancestors, including early mammals, amphibians and fish. Yes, we look and act the way we do because of them. Totally Human explains the many puzzling and strange things about us and the weird and wonderful things we do, simply because we're human. A child-sized take on the scientific fields of evolutionary biology and psychology.

This book explains the many puzzling and strange things about us and the weird and wonderful things we do simply because we’re human. In this fascinating introduction to the scientific fields of evolutionary biology and psychology, children will learn that we look and act the way we do because we have inherited body parts and behaviours from our ancestors. It explains why we laugh, why we crave junk food and much more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great for Kids Jan 25 2012
By Family of Readers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
While this book contains facts that we adults did not know or care to know, children in elementary school get a kick out of this material. They reference the content in conversation all the time, and it's been many months since they read it. Great book!
4.0 out of 5 stars Answers to the questions April 19 2011
By wogan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
This book will answer questions that kids and even adults ask and would like to know the answers to. The print is large enough to easily read and the contents puts the main subjects in bold print. Covered are subjects such as; hiccups, craving junk food, throwing up, smiling, frowning, laughing, crying, right and left, sleep , yawn and why do you wonder why?
First subject covered is you and your inner chimpanzee, and sharing genes with bacteria from 3,700 million years ago.

There are large funny pictures...a dolphin's head on a baby, but why never made sense , since the section explained how chimpanzees are also ticklish, but never mentions dolphins. I also wish it didn't skirt around the fact that it's not really known why yawning is contagious, children should know there are some mysteries still out there.
A glossary and index is included.
The layout and even length are a bit simplistic for the 9-12 age level, although they would gain information from it, younger readers with help would probably be interested in this book too.
4.0 out of 5 stars 9-12 will gobble this up Mar 16 2011
By Lisa Barker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
Why do we hiccup? Fart? Burp? Throw up? Why are we ticklish? Why do we laugh? Why do we yawn? This book is full of these types of questions and more covering everything that is human. Ages 9-12 will gobble it up. - Biblio Reads Children's Book Review
