Great Paranormal Thriller!,
By
This review is from: Touch the Dark (Mass Market Paperback)
Touch the Dark is a fast-paced dark fantasy with a wry sense of humor and great characterization. It opens with Cassandra Palmer, a clairvoyant on the run, finding her own obituary pasted onto her computer screen. The newspaper clipping informs her that she will die in a little over an hour. It's a warning, she assumes, from the vampire who had been chasing her for years. Cassie had been his personal clairvoyant until she found out that he had her parents killed in order to use her abilities for himself. She tried her best to destroy him three years ago, but failed, and now he wants revenge.Cassie gets away, but to stay safe, she needs to cut a deal with the vampire Senate, a group who rules the other vampires with an iron fist. They are not known for being sympathetic, but they are willing to make an exception in her case in order to control her power. Cassie has to find a way to retain control over both her independance and her head, in the middle of a vampire war that threatens to destroy her world. Touch the Dark manages to incorporate mystery, action-adventure and romance into the story-line, yet keeps the fantasy foremost. If you like modern fantasy with a bite to it, you'll love Touch the Dark!

I love paranormal mysteries, romances, whatever, but I find very few with a good plot and fun characters. This one had both. Very good read and I think it's the first in a series, so more to come. I can't wait for the next one!

-----Warning could be spoilers, read second section to avoid them--------First thing's first - have to lay out the plot. Girl can see and talk to ghosts. Girl used to be owned by vampires and she escapes. Girl lives in small apartment with hot flatmate. Girl gets hunted down by former vampire master and is forced to run again, at which point she discovers that roomie is also a vampire. Girl ends up discovering that she is heir to immense powers and also falling into lust with a master vampire aided by a spell. Enter mages, witches, time travel and so forth. Enough said! For those of us who choose to read books of the paranormal genre it can be hard to find a book that features vampires which are not interchangeable from series to series. Karen Chances vampires do indeed fit the profile. However that being said I don't think that makes them any less enjoyable. Largely in the case of Mircea who is a sexy sexy undead man. The main character Cassandra or Cassy is also appreciable because although she fits the sassy tough stereotype she isn't really a mary sue and goes through a wealth of character growth in the series. However I did find the first book in the series was actually my least favorite. Towards the end it hit its stride and it lays the stage for the story to come with enough oomph to get you to pick up the next book I hope. All in all good characterization and enjoyable new world. Like all of her books so far.
