5.0 out of 5 stars Short Stories Sept. 9 2009
This book, is, indeed, a collection of Sookie Stackhouse short stories. (See front cover of the book) The stories fill in some background that is left out in the novels. They are delightful, and a must for any fan.

4.0 out of 5 stars Bits of Sookie May 16 2010
Like most urban fantasy authors, Charlaine Harris puts out a lot of short stories when she isn't writing full-length novels. And thankfully, Harris has produced "A Touch of Dead" -- a short story collection that brings together (almost) all of her Sookie Stackhouse short stories, with their mellow Southern charm and slightly chilling urban fantasy flavor.

But be warned: this is not a new book, it's a short story collection. It's got five stories and rather enlarged print.

In "Fairy Dust," Sookie is already in a bad mood when fairy Claudine arrives at Merlotte's, seeking her psychic brand of help -- she and her brother Claude want to find the murderer of their sister from a local strip club. They have three suspects tied up at their house, and they want Sookie to do her mind-reading thing to discern who murdered Claudia.

"One Word Answer" has Sookie receiving an unexpected legacy when her wild cousin Hadley meets with an "Unfortunate Incident" ("My cousin Hadley, the cheerleader, had become a vampire lesbian
voodooienne. Who knew?"). But she suspects that she isn't getting the whole story from a slick lawyer and weird vampire. And "Dracula Night" comes up when Sookie is invited to celebrate the birthday of Dracula -- and like Linus, Eric is sure that Dracula himself will appear. Of course, nothing goes that smoothly.

Then Sookie gets "Lucky" when Greg Aubert reveals that he thinks his insurance agency is being sabotaged, and Sookie soon discovers a supernatural "in" using one of his family members. But the answer might be something a bit more bizarre... and it might have to do with his flourishing business.

Fairy Dust (from Powers of Detection)

One of the fairy triplets is killed. Claude and Claudine ask for Sookie's help. Sookie goes to their domicile, where three suspects are being held. Sookie needs to interrogate each, delve into their minds for the truth, and figure out which is guilty of the crime.

Dracula Night (from Many Bloody Returns)

Eric Northman invites Sookie to his club, Fangtasia, to celebrate Dracula's birthday. Each year Eric has high hopes that Dracula will appear at his party. This time someone steps forward claiming to be the Prince of Darkness, but is he really?

One Word Answer (from Bite)

Sookie and Bubba are raking leaves at midnight when a limo pulls up. A half-demon lawyer, Mr. Cataliades, and his driver, Waldo, exit the vehicle to inform Sookie of her cousin Hadley's death.

Lucky (from Unusual Suspects)

Greg Aubert, Sookie's insurance agent, asks for her help to figure out who has been breaking into his office at night. Sookie's friend, Amelia, assists in solving the mystery. Turns out that more than one thing is happening after hours.

Gift Wrap (from Wolfsbane & Mistletoe)

On Christmas Eve, Sookie is alone and feeling more than a bit depressed when she stumbles upon a wounded werewolf. Sookie hides the injured Were from those hunting him. In return, the werewolf give her a gift she will never forget.

*** THREE STARS TOTAL! Each of these Sookie Stackhouse stories has been published before in various anthologies. Beside each story title, I name the anthology it appeared in. An Introduction by Charlaine Harris explains the stories, their origins, and sequence of events. I feel that each tale is worthy of your time to read; however, due to being short stories they are not as well developed as the actual full-length dramas. ***

5.0 out of 5 stars correction to the last poster Sept. 13 2009
From reading on Ms.Harris' web site, the new book (A Touch of Dead) is indeed a book of her short stories. It will be out on October 6. And the new full length Sookie book will be out in May 2010.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fills in the missing pieces June 7 2010
Having devoured all of the Sookie Stackhouse novels, I picked up this collection of short stories in hopes of filling in some missing pieces. It's a bit odd when you've read all the books - in succession no less - only to run into a reference that you cannot place. If only I had picked up A Touch of Dead prior to starting the series!

A collection of shorts that occur between novels, great read for a fan, not necessary for all.

4.0 out of 5 stars More Sookie is always good! Feb. 3 2010
By J. Scully TOP 500 REVIEWER
A Touch of Dead consists of 5 short stories that fall in various places in the Southern Vampire Series, featuring heroine Sookie Stackhouse. I absolutely love that Harris has collected up all of the Sookie short stories into one volume. Now I really wish all the other series that I read would do the same thing!

The stories in A Touch of Dead are thoughtfully given to us in chronological order, making it easier to place them in their correct spot in the series as you read. Some give us a little more back-story about events that we've read about in the series, while others just tell a fun little Sookie side-story.

The stories in the order the occur in Sookie's life are "Fairy Dust" (from Powers of Detection), "Dracula Night" (from Many Bloody Returns), "One Word Answer" (from Bite), "Lucky" (from Unusual Suspects), and "Gift Wrap" (from Wolfsbane and Mistletoe). I'm assuming these stories were also written in that same order because they get better and better as they go along.

"Fairy Dust" tells how fairies Claudine and Claude lost their triplet Claudette. While I enjoyed getting back-story on the Fairy twins, I found the mystery to be a bit confusing.

"Dracula Night" is a fun little story that has Sookie joining Eric and Pam at Fangtasia to celebrate Dracula;s birthday.

"One Word Answer" gives us much-wanted back-story on how Sookie learned of her cousin Hadley's death. I was thrilled to finally learn how Hadley's death fit into the greater story told in the Southern Vampire novels.

"Lucky" is a cute story that doesn't have much bearing in the series, but is still an enjoyable read. Featuring Sookie and her new housemate Amelia, "Lucky" has the two ladies playing a little supernatural detective.
