Product Description

From Amazon.com

Harry Nilsson wrote hits for other people (including the Monkees, Three Dog Night, and the Modern Folk Quartet) yet had his biggest hits with covers of other folks' material (Fred Neil's "Everybody's Talkin'," Badfinger's "Without You"). So it makes a perverse kind of sense that his most enduringly popular album is a collection of pre-World War II standards. With Sinatra arranger Gordon Jenkins on hand for traffic control, Nilsson wraps his lungs around such time-honored classics as "Makin' Whoopee!," "It Had to be You," and "As Time Goes By." Although Aerial Ballet and Nilsson Schmilsson are his finest outings, this album is extremely enjoyable on its own terms. --Dan Epstein

Album Description

In the early '70s rock stars did not make standards albums, but that's what Nilsson did with this 1973 LP. He nearly cracked the Top 40, too, backed by Gordon Jenkins' orchestra as he sets that beautiful voice free on As Time Goes By; It Had to Be You; Always ; six bonus outtakes unissued in the U.S., and more!

4.0 out of 5 stars An incomplete masterpiece, July 31 2000

This review is from: Touch of Schmilsson (Audio CD)
This album, featuring brilliant performances by both singer Harry Nilsson and arranger Gordon Jenkins, was (for some reason) hacked up and only about 65% of it was released. As the entire album was conceived as a whole, with links bridging the songs, this was a real shame.

However, the full album has recently been restored and released under the title "As Time Goes By: The Complete Schmilsson in the Night," and so you should absolutely avoid "A Little Touch" and make sure to get "As Time Goes By." You won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars As time goes by, Nilsson stands up as good as the Beatles, Oct 23 2001

Harry Nillson is one of those artist whose name is known, but most people don't know much beyond the coconut song, and everybody's talking. This is a wonderful cd filled with romance and originality. It is hard to believe that the same man who performed jump into the fire and you're breaking my heart could perform such beautiful songs for an audience that will enjoy regardless of their age or musical preference, as long as there is an open mind on behalf of the listener.
Nilsson music stands up as fresh and exciting many years after his last recordings, only groups like the beatles or Kiss truly enjoy such a reputation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Little touch of Scmilsson in the Night, Aug 18 2011
The under appreciated Harry Nilsson in the late 20th century probably recorded the best & most original disc ever made
The combination of his wonderful voice & sense of humour and the magical music of Gordon Jenkins they tell a love story
using some of the best old "standards" ever written.
Happy moments Romantic moments difficult moments sad moments...everything that love is all about

Who could ask for anything more.
