A Dissapointing Film That Does Not Do Justice to the Novel, April 26 2012
This review is from: Town Like Alice (DVD)
I suppose some novels cannot be made into a 2 hour film and still do justice to the novel. This may be the case with this version of the famous Nevil Shute novel. A Town Like Alice cries out to be made into a mini series.
Nevertheless, the quality of this film is not that great. The night scenes are frustratingly impossible to make out at times, and the story simply does not have the depth that it should have. It is difficult to grasp the development of the relationship between Peter Finch and Virginia McKenna, and how much they supposedly fell in love. There are also many fascinating characters in this film that we only get a superficial understanding of their true complexity.
In many respects, the work of Virginia McKenna and Peter Finch save this film from being a very boring enterprise. However, as much charisma as Peter Finch displays in his role, we do not see enough of him to really get a grip on the character he plays.
Overall, a dissapointing film to view and frustrating in that one realizes that the potential of this story to offer so much more never materializes.
