Product Description

John Lasseter and his gang of high-tech creators at Pixar create another entertainment for the ages. Like the few great movie sequels, Toy Story 2 comments on why the first one was so wonderful while finding a fresh angle worthy of a new film. The craze of toy collecting becomes the focus here, as we find out Woody (voiced by Tom Hanks) is not only a beloved toy to Andy but also a rare doll from a popular '60s children's show. When a greedy collector takes Woody, Buzz Lightyear (Tim Allen) launches a rescue mission with Andy's other toys. To say more would be a crime because this is one of the most creative and smile-inducing films since, well, the first Toy Story.

Although the toys look the same as in the 1994 feature, Pixar shows how much technology has advanced: the human characters look more human, backgrounds are superior, and two action sequences that book-end the film are dazzling. And it's a hoot for kids and adults. The film is packed with spoofs, easily accessible in-jokes, and inspired voice casting (with newcomer Joan Cusack especially a delight as Cowgirl Jessie). But as the Pixar canon of films illustrates, the filmmakers are storytellers first. Woody's heart-tugging predicament can easily be translated into the eternal debate of living a good life versus living forever. Toy Story 2 also achieved something in the U.S. two other outstanding 1999 animated features (The Iron Giant, Princess Mononoke) could not: it became a huge box-office hit. --Doug Thomas

Los Angeles Daily News, October 20, 2000

"The computer maestros at Pixar Studios are working at the top of their game, but just as importantly, so are the screenwriters."

5.0 out of 5 stars Just as Enjoyable as the First, Feb 24 2003

S. K. Leggate "Sunni" (Fernley, NV United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Toy Story 2 (VHS Tape)
It is very rare to find a sequel that is just as enjoyable as its predecessor, but this is one of those rare cases. Since the first film, Buzz and Woody have become the greatest of friends and all in Andy's room has been happy go lucky until the day of the family garage sale. At the garage sale Andy's ends up inadvertantly putting himself up for sale, and even though Andy's mother finds him and tells a prospective buyer that he isn't a sale item, Andy still ends up going home with a collector believing in five finger disounts.

This is a touching story, with some great twists. The animation is flawless as usual and the enjoyment level, and humor are at any all time high.

3.0 out of 5 stars Toy Story 2 - Quick!, Aug 8 2011
This review is from: Toy Story 2 [DVD] (DVD)
Was going to call it, "Quick, run!" But thought that might skew things. Point is, this movie moves quick. It runs through character introductions, to moments that you will never forget, to the make every-body-happy ending. What's in between all these scenes are somewhat lame jokes, cheap laughs and references... everyone uses, I mean loves references! Got board first time around, THEN:

Everything with Jesse saves this film!!! You'll feel true heartbreak for her toy story. And, yes, the twist isn't predictable. At least, I didn't find it too over-the-top, saw it in reel one predictable. Which one do I mean; well, you'll have to shell out some cash to Disney and Pixar to find out, won't ya?

Just... can't... help... thinking about forced exposition!

Then again, Pixar didn't have much time to roll this out. Considering everything, it's an okay sequel. Worth having, just NOT picking apart at the SEAMS!
