3.0 out of 5 stars Less than the sum of its parts Nov. 13 2013

Hard to say what goes wrong here. Any of these songs in radio rotation would be strong and intriguing, but as a package on the cd they just don't seem to add up. Everything is played and produced well, but nothing really transcends. The covers of standards, "Nature Boy," "My Romance," and "The Best Is Yet To Come" would be fine in a live set repertoire, but (except for a slightly intriguing stocatto delivery of that last) they bring nothing to merit inclusion here. Biali describes Billy Joel's "And So It Goes" as ubiqitous but includes it anyway -- a nice enough version in a world of many great recordings of this song. I probably like kd lang's "Simple" best on this cd, but I would just as soon hear it sung by kd. I think Biali is a tremendous talent, so maybe I was just expecting this cd to live up to the promise shown by her fantastic "From Sea To Sky." More careful song selection, with attention to cohesion and mood, would have created a better product.

We are all individuals, we have our strengths and weaknesses. And so it is with Laila. Her voice is beautiful, and her piano playing likewise. But overuse of intellect intrudes in almost everything she does. She radically re-arranges tunes that don't need it, and she has the average modern jazz musician's fondness for minor keys to submerge the danger of big emotions.

I dislike almost everything on this cd, so what a surprise it was to hear "Still The One". She co-wrote it (music), and plays piano and sings with such tenderness that I was gobsmacked. Add hearing her perform this in a small room to your bucket list.
