Book Description

June 1 2011
The internet is revolutionizing family history research. Every day new records and resources are placed online and new methods of sharing research and communicating across cyberspace become available. Never before has it been so easy to research family history and to gain a better understanding of who we are and where we came from. But, as Chris Paton demonstrates in this straightforward practical guide, while the internet is an enormous asset, it is also something to be wary of. Researchers need to take a cautious approach to the internet information they acquire. They need to ask, where did the original material come from and has it been accurately reproduced, why was it put online, what has been left out and what is still to come? As he leads the researcher through the multitude of resources that are now accessible online, Chris Paton helps to answer these questions. He shows what the internet can and cannot do, and he warns against the various traps researchers can fall into along the way.

Very well done. Up to date and very informative. Especially for those doing Family Research in the UK from afar.
This is a book that would be well used.

3.0 out of 5 stars Tracing Your Family History on the Internet Dec 28 2012

Because the book was written a year or so ago, some of the links are no longer current. Otherwise the book is very helpful.
3.0 out of 5 stars It is OK if you live in the UK Jan. 14 2013

I have hundreds of books in my genealogy library so I can always find something in each one useful. This book is no exception, but I won't be giving it a very high grade. This book is OK if you live in the UK. I gave it as a Xmas gift to a family member and given its recent date of release figured she would find it useful in conducting her family history pursuits online. What the description does not tell you is it is a UK based book with an emphasis on UK websites and research. It is definitely not what I wanted to give as a gift as I was looking for something more broadly based on internet research. As a genealogy instructor who teaches an Internet and Genealogy class at a local college, the book is a good basic primer, but I must point out that some of the links are no longer active. Overall, it's OK, but the book description really needs to reflect the roots of this book's lineage in the UK so the buyer is aware of what they are purchasing.
