4.0 out of 5 stars Infuriating woman, exciting adventure, May 17 2002
By P. K. Stone (Avon Lake, Ohio USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I won't dwell on the inspiring story of a woman finding a new path in life, etc., as that has been well covered by other reviewers. This book was enjoyable, but not purely of the life-changing sort many other reviews note.

Robyn Davidson records the events of her journey with painful honesty. You will want to give her a hard slap and tell her to start acting like an adult. You will read of her many foolish actions and shake your head in disbelief. In most cases, she does not suffer greatly for her immaturity, but in the end, she pays dearly for one careless moment. It is that moment, towards the end of her adventure, which redeems this book from the genre of self-obsessed introspection.

You will not finish "Tracks" with any desire to relive her trip for yourself, but you will be glad she was took on the challenge.

5.0 out of 5 stars Camel trips, April 1 2002
By C. Manning - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Robyn Davidson's "Tracks" and Robin Lee Graham's "Dove" have had a major and long-term impact on my growing up. They stoked a serious case of wanderlust. Almost twenty years after the first of many readings, I'm reading "Tracks" again right now.

[Something I wanted to point out that I noticed from this reading that I had skimmed over on other readings. This was an admirable trip in every way, but to say that she did it alone, is not quite right. Let me just mention a few names: Sallay, Tolly, Jen, Rick and Eddie. I think it's almost impossible to do anything ALONE.]

A lot of my book is underlined with quotes like this one: "There are some moments in life that are like pivots around which your existance turns--small intuitive flashes, when you know you have done something correct for a change, when you think you are on the right track."

And the last line of the book: "Camel trips, as I suspected all along, and as I was about to have confirmed, do not begin or end, they merely change form."

Awesome. A salute to Robyn Davidson.

5.0 out of 5 stars Circling Away, Nov 27 2001
By S. Johnston (Hobart, OK USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I love this book. Mine is in tatters, and now in a zip-lock bag. I took it traveling with me for 10 years and read it several times. Robyn shows that circling away from family and friends is important. Possibly scary at times. And then the risk of not recognizing each other when you return. But, if you don't circle away you won't have anything to share. The most important lesson for me was that I was as strong and powerful as I would ALLOW myself to be. Oh yeah, and dreams can become real. All it takes is one step at a time. What a lesson! Buy this book today!!
