One of the later Spencer Tracy-Katherine Hepburn matchups, this time pitting efficiency expert--sorry, that's "methods engineer"--Richard Sumner (Tracy) against TV-network research whiz Bunny Watson (Hepburn) over adding a new-fangled computer--again, sorry, that's "electronic brain"--to her department, thereby threatening her and her colleagues' livelihoods. Gig Young appears as Bunny's beau, an ambitious network executive who strings her along and becomes apoplectic at the idea that she doesn't need him. But as always, it's Hepburn and Tracy's bickering-flirting that makes this such a winning enterprise--a lunch date that turns into an interrogation and their sly repartee during a Christmas party are a couple of the movie's hilarious highlights. Interestingly, what starts out as something of a technophobic exercise--Hepburn fears for her job, and a computer goes haywire--takes an abrupt turn (perhaps the IBM product placement had something to do with that). Briskly scripted by Henry and Phoebe Ephron (Nora and Delia's parents) from a play by William Marchant. --David Kronke

Product Description

She adjusts a stocking on one slim, elegant leg. He wanders in, admiring the view. She glances up ... and it's magic. It stayed magic for Spencer Tracy and Katherine Hepburn for 25 years, from that first movie meeting in Woman of the Year, through eight more classic films. Cinema fans who have long celebrated the remarkable couple's on-and-off-screen partnership have more to celebrate with Tracy & Hepburn: The Definitive Collection, the only place to find all the films they made together, plus a glowing documentary about Tracy hosted by Hepburn. From witty sophisticated comedies (Woman of the Year, Without Love, Adam's Rib, Pat and Mike, Desk Set) to trenchent dramas (Keeper of the Flame, The Sea of Grass, State of the Union) to their final film rich with laughs and tears (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner), this unique collection captures every moment of the incomparable Tracy-Hepburn screen magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars We get set up with Desk Set at last! May 3 2004
Format:DVD
"A large market exists in the U.S. for classic movies on DVD. There can really be no excuse for withholding America's rightful cinematic history when Europe and Asia is already enjoying it!" That comes from another reviewer on these pages, and I second that emotion.
I'll go even further than that review and say that Desk Set is the BEST film with Spence and Kate. And don't forget the great Gig Young doing his perfect second banana routine, which has already delighted us in so many other films. They didn't hide behind so many physical gags or the safer facade of black and white. Instead they acted out the script in glorious full color widescreen and stereo, no less.
And did Fox drop the ball in giving us the proper widescreen version of this classic? No, they did not! The studio came through for us (which is more than we can usually say about studios) and put it out in widescreen! And they even added some actress commentary for good measure. Yes, it's been a long 9-year wait, since DVDs first came out in 1995, but it's here now, at least.
And what a great modern plot Desk Set has: an independent woman (instead of a cloying playtoy), a job for that woman as a research expert, (instead of the usual secretary trying to date her boss), a strong leading man but one with a sense of humor (instead of the usual he-man tough guy). And all smack in the middle of the early revolution of COMPUTERS!
The man vs. machine concepts in this film will reverberate down through the ages. Plus it has a great romantic plot, too. This film has everything! Many people say they love to see a well-restored 1957 Chevy, but I'll take this well-restored 1957 Desky instead!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great cast Feb. 11 2012
Format:DVD
Funny, literate, even about computers, which were almost unknown -or greatly feared- at that time. Tracey and Hepburn at their peak in a most unusual romantic comedy.

5.0 out of 5 stars A cute little movie! May 27 2013
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
This would be your typical Spencer Tracy/Katharine Hepburn movie. A delight to watch. Set during the Christmas season. I love these old movies anyway, and it's always nice to see the real chemistry that is so obvious when these two acted together. A nice little jem to add to your collection of Tracy/Hepburn movies. It's mainly about how Computers are being introduced to make the work more efficient and how that back fires in the end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Computer angst Feb. 12 2014
Format:DVD|Verified Purchase
If you think that computer problems are a recent development, just watch this half-century old flick and you'll change your mind. Track and Hepburn at their best with a great supporting cast and one of the funniest adlibs ever.

5.0 out of 5 stars Superb Jan. 10 2014

A wonderful compilation of all of the films that they did together .Enough has already been said about their off-screen relationship but it begs the question " Would their on-screen chemistry had been so vibrant if that had not been so ? "

I love classic films that are rare and difficult to view. I especially love Tracy/Hepburn films and this 10 disc collection has it all! These favourite films that TCM plays quite frequently are included in this collection: "The Woman of the Year, Pat and Mike, Adam's Rib, Desk Set (which is a joy to watch) and Guess Who's Coming to Dinner". These other films "Keeper of the Flame, Without Love (with supporting character of Lucille Ball), State of the Union and The Sea of Grass" are full of lots of "Tracy/Hepburn" mutual "strong lead connections" that made them such a "Hollywood made couple". Many of these films were directed by long-time friend/director George Cukor and some of these films have "special features" such as "vintage shorts, classic cartoons and some commentary on these later films. Included in the last the disc is "The Spencer Tracy Legacy: A Tribute By Katherine Hepburn". Well worth the dollars to have this collection in my video library!

4.0 out of 5 stars liked everything about it Jan. 31 2012
Format:DVD
I ordered this b/c I remembered the wonderful dresses and suits the women wore to work, especially for their office Christmas party. Hepburn's apartment is a treat too and it is an interesting story line full of misconceptions. I am glad I bought this classic. I am adding it to my Christmas movie collection.
