Product Description

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-8-Skillfully read by Claire Higgins, Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet will hold listeners spellbound as they become involved in the feud between the Capulets and the Montagues and in Romeo and Juliet's plight of love. Higgins' reading is very natural, and her voice is exceedingly pleasant to listen to. The cassette includes a plot summary, an introduction to Shakespeare by Leon Garfield, as well as supplementary information about Shakespeare and his writings by Dr. Rex Gibson, all read by Simon Russell Beale. This additional information is very worthwhile and will increase the listener's understanding of Shakespeare and why he continues to be important in literature. Peter Hutchins arranged the period background music. The technical qualities are excellent, and the teaching objectives are met. This program is appropriate for individual or group listening, and the additional information will provide an excellent springboard for discussion. A superior acquisition for both public and school libraries with audio collections.

Review

"We can more easily decide between Shakespear and any other author, than between him and himself. Shall we quote any more passages to shew his genius or the beauty of Romeo and Juliet? At that rate, we might quote the whole."

3.0 out of 5 stars Romeo and Juliet, Aug 2 2002
By
Caterina and Florencia
We want to share with you our opinion of this edition of the famous writer William Shakespeare: "Romeo and Juliet". In one hand this book helps us, students, teachers, to incorporate poetry into our minds; and learn things about those ages, for example their customs. Also it helps to improve your English.
At first we couldn't understand the way this tragedy was set up. But then, with our teacher's help, we undestood the main ideas. We believe it's very difficult to analise, because of the form in which it is written, like when Romeo compares Juliet with light: "Doth teach tourches to burn right". Also when Juliet talkes with Romeo in the balcony scene: "How cam'st thou hither, tell me, and wherefore?"
Although the ending was very tragic we liked it because it was original. No one would think that the star-cross lovers would end with the feudge by commiting suicide.
In conclusion it is a long, difficult and boring book. We do not recomend it to you, students, if you read it without a teacher, expert or dictionary by your side. Thank you...

4.0 out of 5 stars Complex Love, May 22 2001
I have seen all movie versions about Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet and still love the book everytime I revisit the story. Every word captivates the reader into truly feeling the passion and tragedy of these two lovers. Even a character such as Tybalt Capulet won me over as far as description goes. Shakespearian writing is very much complex and confusing but it has a touch romance and anger which adds to the emotion of the story. Read this classic tragedy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Shakespeare ever!, Jan 14 2000
This review is from: Romeo and Juliet (Paperback)
Romeo and Juliet is the best of Shakespeares work ever. Everyone knows the story, but once you read it, it brings the meaning and connection to a different level. The language is beautiful. The words passed betweem Romeo and his love are so moving, you read them over and over. Even if you don't understand what they are saying, you'll still get the general idea and fall in love with this forbidden romance. Even though its a sad ending. The tragedy just adds more to the play. A magnificent book...you have to read it.
