4.0 out of 5 stars My first MS cert course Aug 24 2012
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This training kit requires (for the course material) for you to set up a domain controller server for active directory, Windows Server 2008 (core install), and four Windows Server 2008 full installs. On each of those 5 servers, you'll then install one or more instances of SQL Server 2012. For Chapter 8, you also need to configure a storage area network to use for clustering SQL Servers. The instructions for all these configurations are supplied, but are not as complete and accurate as I prefer, and I eventually gave up getting a functional SAN. Some network nerd resources to help you with this aspect of the course would be a plus.
For this course, you should also have a box that you can install Windows Server 2008 R2 on - so that you can install the virtual servers mentioned above on that. 8GB of RAM minimum, for your virtual network.
After all that, the course materials are fairly straightforward. I noted four dozen errata in this text, other people contributed some too - it was obviously rushed to publication. The is the acid test of how well the book functions. I'll update this review after the exam.
Whew - exam over, passed. But, the book and the exam questions do not fit too well. This should not be your only source of info for this exam - either several years of experience, or you need to broaden your studying to include other books. Or be prepared to write it more than once. MS currently has a free rewrite offer (search for "MS exam second shot"), which includes a 15% discount - a better deal than the coupon included with the book.

I found errors in the book, spelling mistakes and other issues when using this to study for the course. Try some of the non-microsoft training materials.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good overview, but make sure to go BEYOND the book Aug 16 2012
By Kenneth J. Powers - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
This book is a great start to preparing for exam 70-462. You get a DVD with practice questions and practice exams, and you also get a voucher that take 15% off the price of the exam registration fee. The book is not big and not too small. It has good detail about each topic, and also has good walkthroughs that you can (and should) practice on a test machine. However, it is VERY important that you also review the MSDN links that are provided in every section of every chapter. If you rely solely on the book for your preparation, you will not have the full details about the subject matter. Microsoft exams are notorious for having questions on obscure little details that you might not encounter in your everyday work with the tested software. In addition, as the book points out, the exams will be updated as service packs and hot fixes are released. The only way to get the updated information is to go out on the web and review MSDN and other sites.

My only criticism of this book, and it's a criticism of many exam guides, is that the review questions aren't detailed enough. If Microsoft is going to test us on obscure details, then their review questions should be detailed as well. I've found I have to write my own review questions to be assured of having a sufficient level of knowledge to pass the exam. I shouldn't have to do that, since that's the whole point of buying an exam guide.

Other than that, it's a good book and worth the price of purchase.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent for the exam Sep 28 2012

Book writing was clear and easy to understand and will not confuse you like some tech books. As others have mentioned make sure and follow the links provided in the book to gain all you need for the exam the book does not cover everything.

The exercises and examples they have are very helpful but a small warning before purchase on that note. Make sure you have a powerful computer that can run up to six virtual machines(at least 8 GB RAM) at once or just six computers on a network. If you preview the book and look in the hardware requirements it will go into more detail about the needed computer specs. Also they will be all running a 64bit OS so make sure and use either Hyper-V or Virtual Box and make sure your processor can support 64bit virtualzation and know how to enable it(usally found in your bios somewhere).

4.0 out of 5 stars Picked up ideas and tips/tricks Oct 1 2012

I bought this book to get ready to take the Microsoft exam. I am still working through the guide, but so far, I am really pleased with the information provided. Only detracting feature is the amount of errors (both technical and spelling) in the book. They seriously need a more thorough proofreader. Other than that - good book.
