4.0 out of 5 stars Great josei manga Jan 4 2013
By Sarah TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Comic
This is a Josei manga about a journalist named Sumire Iwaya. Volume I starts off with Sumire's fiance dumping her because she is more educated than he is. He feels that he cannot be in a woman's shadow and has an affair with his mistress. Sumire is mortified and feels that she cannot go on anymore especially facing all the people at work who will gossip about her (Sumire and her fiance work at the same place so everyone will find out about it).

That day on her way home, she finds a boy sleeping in a box by her apartment and decides to take him in and make him her pet "dog" Momo. In exchange for giving her company so that she can escape her loneliness, she cooks for him and gives him a place to stay for free (her apartment). This is a truly interesting story and although I am only on volume 4, it is fun and exciting to see how Sumire and Momo's relationship starts to develop past that of owner and pet...

This manga has won the 2003 Kodansha manga award for shojo and also has a Japanese TV drama called Kimi wa Petto (translation: you are my pet)

5.0 out of 5 stars Entertaining July 2 2009
By Sam TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:Comic
Tramps Like Us Volume 1 by Yayoi Ogawa is quite entertaining and is aimed for older girls. The drawings are great and the story keeps the reader interested. I actually like both the main characters, Sumire Iwaya and Momo (Takeshi Gouda).

Sumire Iwaya is a 26-year-old career oriented woman who is tall and beautiful. She discovers one day that her boyfriend whom she planned to marry is cheating on her. He has an inferiority complex - he feels that since she is taller than him, more educated, and earns more, he cannot stay with her.

One night while walking home, Sumire sees a large box lying around. Wondering what this trash is doing there, she opens it to find a person inside. It turns out that he's alive and good-looking. She takes him to her apartment and for fun she tells him that he can stay with her only if he becomes her pet. He happily accepts. Sumire names him Momo, the name of her deceased dog.

Discover Momo's past. What will happen when Sumire's ex-lover appears at her workplace? Can Momo be kept a secret? Can Sumire handle a pet, a man, and work?

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth the read May 4 2005
Format:Comic
Like all manga there are continuity problems with the story. It jumps around a bit. It is still a good story though. Its premise is based on a business woman taking in a homeless boy off the street and adopting him as her 'pet'; naming him after her childhood dog. The story follows both of their lives as they live together and the strangeness of keeping a human as a pet.

It was originally a really popular serial manga in Japan and it seems to be well translated. Lots of katakana and a few Hiragana exclamations that meaning can be gleaned from if not understood.

A good story. Not for young readers its rated older teen for a reason. The characters are likeable and the 'whats going to happen' theme should keep most readers interested.
