I saw Don Preston perform at a free concert at the L.A., County Museum ofArt two years ago. He was great. This CD shows his unusual diversity, he plays Zappa Music with a Thelonius Monk touch.

Don Preston is still a Mother,
By Etan Rosenbloom "Toe Surgeon" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Transformation (Audio CD)
Don Preston may have made a name through his work with Frank Zappa, but the man is also a fine jazz pianist with excellent taste in sidemen. Preston's acoustic trio with bassist Joel Hamilton and drummer Alex Cline covers a lot of ground, from the spiky post-bop of Zappa favorite "The Eric Dolphy Memorial arbeque" and introspective balladry of "Inner Blues (not a blues)" to expert free improv (Transformation) and even the contemporary classical feel of Preston's own "The Lind Sonata." Throughout, Preston, Hamilton and Cline display their customary chops, but they also possess a remarkably intuitive ability to interact with one another, most noticeable in the more out passages. The three deconstruct each of these pieces, examine their parts, and then put 'em back together again. Transformation, indeed.
