3.0 out of 5 stars Untapped Potential, July 24 2009

Having been a big fan of DK guides, I was really looking forward to this volume, but unfortunately, I was to be disappointed. See, for whatever reason, somewhere along they line, they decided that this book should cover both live-action Transformers movies. This despite the "Revenge of the Fallen" logo, which implies a focus on the 2nd movie. As a result, this book ends up mostly dealing with characters who already got extensive coverage elsewhere. In fact, the book doesn't even cover a sequel character until 3/4 of the way through! Would these pages, often dealing with now-dead guys like Blackout, Frenzy, Jazz, and Barricade, have been better used covering say, Arcee, Soundwave, Scalpel or even Alice? I'll go out on a limb and say "Yes, someone who buys a book with a 'Revenge of the Fallen' subtitle probably would have preferred that." Oh wait, I see that "ROTF" might actually a be a logo, and not part of the official book title. Cute.

Having said that, if you don't have the previous DK guides that cover the first movie, or if you just ignore the "ROTF" logo/title, this book is quite nice, and does have the usual lovely visuals and the kind of encyclopedic information that dorks like me love. On those terms, this is actually an above-average guide book, particularly for the price. I guess I'm just frustrated by what feels like a bit of bait-and-switch.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fool Me Once..., Jun 24 2009
By Gregory Fam - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Transformers The Movie Universe (Hardcover)
I can't believe that two years after making the same mistake with the first DK Transformers Movie Guide, I again repeat my idiocy and excitedly buy a sealed book without looking inside, and hence paying the price literally when I find out what a dumbo I've been.

The DK publications that tie in to movies are expected to be chock full of detail, insider bits that give you even more of what you can get out of the movie. My favourite example of this is the Star Wars visual dictionaries.

In this case, just like two years ago, this book tells me absolutely NOTHING useful, and gives me ZERO advance knowledge of the movie.

- About 75% of the book is repeated material in the FIRST movie, 2007. Even then, not all the robots in that movie were included. Still no Bonecrusher or Brawl, for instance.

- Only about 25% of the book has robots from ROTF. Even then the coverage is slipshod. Forget learning anything about Arcee... she's not in there. Give up hopes of learning anything about Jolt, whom you see do something useful in the movie for maybe 20sec. You'd think that Jetfire deserves a page devoted to his vehicle mode, and another on the combination with Prime. You'd think that the Constructicons each merits a description of vehicle and robot mode, but nothing! You get a couple pages on Devastator instead.

- All the pictures are concept art that I have already seen on the net. I get the impression that the writers of this book did not have any inside information whatsoever, and cobbled together the material from bits and pieces that have trickled out over the last mew months.

A DK book should be a reference book that, after watching the movie, I go to find out even MORE about the robots. It should not be a book that tells me even LESS than what I will learn after watching the movie. It should delight the reader with a more detailed look at the robots that get only brief screen time such as Arcee, Breakaway, the Constructicons, etc.

As they say, fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me.

2.0 out of 5 stars Nice renders, but incomplete characters, July 30 2009
By F. Felip Miralles - Published on Amazon.com

It's true: this book is almost the same as the 2007 one. More pages, new few characters, but same reading style. It's incredible we here here again Barricade or Frenzy. Where is Arcee, Long Haul, Rampage, Scavenger, Jolt, Sideways...?

3.0 out of 5 stars It's Okay, July 21 2009
By I Hate Bush - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Transformers The Movie Universe (Hardcover)
The book seems to be mostly about the 'bots from the first movie, with a smattering of the 'bots from the second movie near the end.

The diagrams could have been a bit more detailed, and should have had more robots from Revenge Of The Fallen, but oh well.

Not a good book, not a bad book.

I'd recommend a used copy.
