Another element in the IDW Transformers tapestry, Mar 29 2008
By Thomas Awad - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Transformers Spotlight Volume 2 (Paperback)
This graphic novel is a collection of Issues 6-10 of Transformers Spotlight, a series of issues in which each one focuses on a single transformer but all the stories fit into the bigger Transformers Universe of IDW comics. The characters in this book are, in order, Soundwave, Kup, Galvatron, Optimus Prime and Ramjet.
First of all, who this book is not for: if you have no interest in following the Transformers comic world, forget about this comic right now. It is NOT a stand-alone story, and the plot twists are convoluted even for those who are following the entire thread. However, if you have some interest in the Transformers G1 world, you probably owe it to yourself to pick up the IDW transformers comics: Simon Furman is putting together the richest Transformers world we have seen since his run on Marvel Comics in the late 1980s. The depths of the characters are being explored, and the traditional catch-all transformers gimmicks (the Matrix, Unicron, etc) are being avoided.
Right now, the current books that comprise this universe are Infiltration, Stormbringer, Escalation, Spotlight 1 & 2, and the upcoming Devastation. If you want to start somewhere, I recommend Infiltration and Stormbringer. If those are interesting to you, by all means get the rest!

Good collection of spotlight stories..., Aug 28 2009

This is a good collection of one shot "character spotlights" in the IDW Transformers universe. Yes, Optimus Prime appears in a solo story and it is OK. I'm not a fan of the villian in this story, but once you understand the supporting characters, it kinda makes sense...
Soundwave's story is great. Kinda ironic towrds the end, too...
Kup's story is very different and fun, too. It's great to see Springer and his dedication to his former friend and mentor...
Galvatron's story is a great addition to the "mainline" (Infiltration, Escalation and Devastation) story. It's cool to see differnt bots and in thier native Cybertron modes...
Ramjet's story was OK. I never thought of him as being anymore than a common soldier. But in this story is much different from the cartoons! You'll see...

If you like Transformers and have enjoyed or are interested IDW's "Ultimates" approach to their universe, then this is worth picking up. These aren't necessarily the best Transformers stories ever told but they are enjoyable. They don't really stand on their own but fit in to the larger story arc of the IDW Transformers Universe.
