Review

Drs. McGinn and Sanderson have done an excellent job of writing an empirically validated treatment manual for obsessive-compulsive disorder. This volume integrates the most widely researched cognitive-behavioral treatments for OCD into one comprehensive therapy guide. The book is clinically detailed, with a step-by-step explanation of each phase in the assessment and treatment of OCD. The guide includes one extended case study, with detailed session transcripts, that runs throughout the book and illustrates how to implement each treatment strategy. The book is very readable, both for clinicians who are already experienced with OCD and for those who are just beginning. I highly recommend it. (Jeffrey Young, Ph.D. )

This is an up-to-date guide to the cognitive-behavioral treatment of OCD for the mental health professional. A common and disabling disorder that is often misdiagnosed, OCD is highly responsive to appropriate treatment. This book is an important advance, as it offers clinicians a practical and specific treatment approach based on an informed theoretical background. A significant barrier to the treatment of OCD patients is the lack of adequately trained cognitive-behavioral therapists. The authors address this important public health problem by increasing the number of informed and well-trained clinicians. (Eric Hollander, M.D. )

Since many practitioners seek out books on cognitive-behavioral therapy to fill a gap in their training, there is clearly a need for 'how-to' treatment manuals. With this book, Drs. McGinn and Sanderson have met that need with utmost skill and mastery. They have succeeded admirably in their goal to educate and train clinicians in the cognitive-behavioral treatment of obsessive compulsive disorder. (Aaron T. Beck, M.D. )

Book Description

Treatment for patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) has dramatically improved with the innovative use of cognitive-behavioral therapies. Drs. McGinn and Sanderson have developed a comprehensive method of treatment that combines psychoeducational and cognitive restructuring with traditional exposure and response prevention techniques. A detailed session-by-session guide is presented to help clinicians assess and treat OCD with this unique blend of therapies. Using a composite case example, the authors demonstrate exactly how to implement various strategies from the initial interview to the conclusion of treatment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder, April 13 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Treatment of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (Hardcover)
This is an excellent book for the practicing clinician. It is highly practical, very thorough, and well written. The organization of the book is most useful. It takes the readers through treatment as it would unfold, providing clear instruction and useful clinical "tips." The approached described has been well-established in the treatment outcome literature. Anyone who treats OCD, from the novice to the expert, will find volume valuable.
