While there are certainly strains of Christianity that put too much emphasis on tradition, Evangelicals typically put far too little emphasis here. In fact, most Evangelicals suffer from a general historical ignorance which stems from a self-centered chronological snobbery. In our (noble) eagerness to emphasize the authority of Scripture, we forget that Christians who have gone before us had the Scriptures as well and that God taught them things from his Word that we would do well to learn, retain, and build upon. Richard Hannula's book is an excellent place to begin teaching a new generation of Christians about our "big brothers and sisters" in the faith, on whose legacy and because of whose faithfulness in the gospel we are where we are. As a parent, this is a book filled with the kind of God-honouring and courageous heroes that I want my children emulating instead of the shallow, self-centered and Godless idolatry of celebrity worship rampant in our culture. This is a great teaching tool which is a blessing for the teacher (parent) as well.

This is an awesome book! We studied it in our adult Sunday school class with extra readings on each chapter from other sources. It is information that every Christian should know because it is our history! Rather than obsess on (a) series which is information that is fiction, we should read about the facts of those that went before us, many who died standing up for their faith. It is written at a level that grade school children can understand. Most adult Christians know little of our own history!

If you want to read an excellent book about stalwart soldiers for Christ, written by a principled (no pun intended), committed, and passionate Christian, and if you want to be "spurred on toward love and good deeds" by the examples of these amazing and courageous believers, read Trial and Triumph! In his writing, Mr. Hannula makes Augustine, Ambrose, Polycarp, and all the others come alive--just as he makes history exciting and real for the students he teaches in his history classes. Do yourself a favor and read his book.
