5.0 out of 5 stars I'm an artist, May 17 2007
By Trina Krieger - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Tribal Art (Hardcover)
I wanted to look to the art of the past to inform my art now. This book has been very helpful, in that it has so very many photographs of tribal artwork. I especially love the masks and the symbolism involved, and I wish there were even more of this book! I want more pottery, more masks, more everything. There really is a lot of information in this book, though, so I shouldn't complain. It would be great for collectors of tribal art, which is what it's meant to be.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not a good book on tribal arts, Mar 29 2012
By David Norden "D. Norden African-arts.info" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Tribal Art: The Essential World Guide (Hardcover)
Written by Judith Miller this book is not a good resource if you want to know the tribal art market. First the book contains plenty of objects that are not genuine, second the mentioned prices are not accurate and many descriptions contains errors, also many of these objects prices are just estimates from auction houses, and often these objects where even not sold. Also some of the mentioned prices are inflated, and many of the objects in this books are unsold dealers objects, they just added the price they wanted, not the prices the objects really sold for. The concept of this book relates to a much better one from Mr. Bacquart The Tribal Arts of Africa if you are interested in prices you'd better look on the result list of objects at auction houses like Sotheby's Christie's, Lempertz or Bonhams, just to name a few.

The book is one of the best because of the beautiful clear images and descriptions. Also the estimated prices are included per item. It is a must for the artist or the layman who is interested in tribal art.
