4.0 out of 5 stars Some of Trip Hop's best, Dec 20 2003
By
Brent G. Johnson "brentos24" (Yokosuka Japan) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Trip Hop Test - Part 3 (Audio CD)
I've had this CD for a few years now and I consider it an essential part of my binder. My favorite songs on the album are "The Beat Goes On" by Basco, "Terminal Intensity" by Wizard of Oh and "Weekend Starts Here" by Fatboy Slim. I used to hear the Basco track at raves back in the day and it sounded a lot better at a faster tempo, but its still a good track. The Wizard of Oh track sounds in some ways similar to my all time favorite Prodigy song, Poison, and the Fatboy Slim track sounds similar to a once popular Snoop Doggy Dogg song. This album was made around the same time so the DJ's and producers were using the same machines. Its interesting to hear how different ideas materialized using the same medium. This is definitely not to say that these songs are a rip off of other commercial hits. As for "Nothing Like Tomorrow" thats my least favorite song on this album and I don't feel it even belongs on here. I skip this track every time I get to it. I just cant stand the bassline. I'm not an authority on the matter, but I don't think that track even qualifies as Trip Hop.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Oversoul Song, Mar 25 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Trip Hop Test - Part 3 (Audio CD)
Please ignore the rating, but if you listen to the sample the song "Nothing Like Tomorrow" and really like it, or if you have the CD and really like that song check out the band "Supreme Beings of Leisure" because it sounds like it is them under a different name. Their debut is self-titled and pretty good. In fact a different version of "Nothin' like Tomorrow" appears on it. I don't think they sound at all like Portishead-- Much more upbeat.

2.0 out of 5 stars Is missing something, Jun 10 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Trip Hop Test - Part 3 (Audio CD)
In my opinion, this CD is a all right but needs to be listened to couple of times before you can really start to appreciate it. It doesn't have anything that really grabs your attention at the first time so it is a potential for one of those CD's that is forgotten after a while. It is also missing the depth to it and is all to alike. I liked Nothing Like Tomorrow - Oversoul 7 the most. It reminded me of Portishead and was the only song that really got to me. It had a mysterious sound to it and by listening to it you feel like you are drifting away. I am an avid fan of music that gets deep into the soul and has a beautiful sound. Most of the other songs on the CD were too alike to each other. I personally prefer more variety I would recommend this CD if you have patience and are ready to listen to it couple of times before you start liking it. I have to admit that I do not know much about the other music they have made so I wouldn't be able to compare it to that so I will leave it to say that I am willing to keep this CD but I would not invest in any others without prior listening.
