4.0 out of 5 stars Great mouse, for specific hands., Dec 8 2010
By Bwappo - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Tron 7btn Usb Gaming Mouse PC (Personal Computers)
I salute Razer for a courageous design and excellent Windows driver and software support; this mouse will not suit everyone. I'll list the design features, then discuss how those translated into mouse behavior for me.

The TRON mouse is much smaller than I anticipated from pictures and videos, and feels much lighter than other mice I've used. While part of the lack of width comes from the "cutaway" sides (a great feature to increase the comfort of using the side buttons), it took my large hands some time to adjust to this diminuitive mouse. I used the mouse on a wooden desk with no mousepad, and the mouse glides more smoothly (and precisely) than any I used in the past -- a real joy. The extremely long, braided cord never got in the way of my gaming.

The mouse sports two side buttons on both sides, the primary reason I bought this mouse. The left and right top buttons straddle the clickable scroll wheel, which in turn does not click left or right (also a win in my book). The scroll wheel works by soft gradations, with no option to switch to a smooth scroll. Razer did a superb job with button tension. The top buttons click easily and flawlessly, and the scroll wheel button provides enough resistance to prevent accidental clicks when scrolling, but not so much as to prevent intentional clicks -- it really can function as a third button.

All four side buttons use a higher tension than the top buttons, a critical feature as I experimented with how to hold the mouse. To effectively use the side buttons and still move the mouse, my thumb partially rests on the ridge below the side buttons, and partially on the buttons themselves. I never had a misfire on the side buttons, and never had trouble using them when I needed to. For the far side of the mouse, my ring finger and pinky rested to the front and below the side buttons, on the corresponding ridge. As I rarely use those fingers to press buttons, I had more difficulty with those side buttons. Which is to say, it wasn't easy, but certainly doable and worthwhile.

One of my critical measures for a gaming mouse is how smoothly I can manipulate the mouse while still using the side buttons. A poorly designed mouse forces you to lose your grip on the mouse to use the side buttons, or makes you bear down on the mouse itself with the base of your fingers when you press a side button. The TRON mouse design requires me to slightly roll my thumb upward, using the ridge below the side buttons as an axis. For gamers with a light touch, holding the mouse from this point works naturally. For a high-strung, spastic gamer like myself, using the lower ridge as an axis seemed like resting my thumb on a thick guitar string. Not bad, but not comfortable.

Aesthetics measure somewhere between ridiculous and awesome. Baby blue light up stripes on top (the sides don't light up) with a baby blue tail light? A tiny speaker inside the mouse that makes the zzhroom sound like a lightsaber when the mouse powers up? Yes, they're corny. And they made me smile each time. I wish the mouse made the zzhroom sound when my computer came out of sleep mode, but it only happens when I reboot the computer, which is rare these days.

I make it a point to never install drivers or software for peripherals if I can help it, given my past experience with poor quality software. However, the right-side pair of side buttons by default serve to raise or lower dpi on the fly, which wastes the usability of such a unique mouse. I decided to risk installing the software, which promptly blew me away. Simple, straightforward, lightweight, yet full of all kinds of fine-tuning features. In the middle of a game, I tabbed out and reassigned buttons, which then worked immediately in game. If I could purchase Razer's software as a standalone program to use with any mouse, I would do it in a heartbeat. It's that good.

I almost kept the mouse in spite of my discomfort with my grip, but twice in the first week I had the mouse, it spontaneously "rebooted", for lack of a better description. The mouse literally shut off for about three seconds, started up with light and sound, and picked up where I left off. The second reboot happened during a critical encounter for an online game, and my team almost died as a result. I didn't see the problem recur in the second week, so maybe it was a fluke. Regardless, with a heavy geek heart, I returned the mouse.

For $100, the TRON mouse fulfills almost every capability I wanted from it. But the combination of the smaller size of the mouse and my lack of a light touch made the mouse too uncomfortable for me to enjoy, or to consider modding to meet my needs. Four stars doesn't accurately measure this mouse. If you fit the profile, the TRON mouse will achieve a fifth star for you, and enhance your gaming experience. For me personally, a three star rating reflects a mouse that had great intentions, but fell short in delivery. I dearly hope Razer produces another variation of this mouse in the future, retaining the buttons and button tension quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars VERY HAND SPECIFIC, May 9 2011

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Tron 7btn Usb Gaming Mouse PC (Personal Computers)
Like someone stated before me, this mouse is not for everyone, I just got it a few days ago. I have to adjust and train myself on this mouse which i have never had to do with a mouse before. The buttons on the side are very sensitive, doesn't take much to press those. The only thing that I didn't like about this product is that the driver disk didn't come with it. You have to go to the razor support site for it, not sure if that would be a problem for other people but just something that some might find as an inconvience if your internet is not that great (i.e me). You can still use the mouse without the drivers but you won't get the full benefits of using the software that is intended for it, which seems awesome. Hope this helps you guys out before you purchase this.

5.0 out of 5 stars One of the best gaming mice on the market, Dec 28 2010
By Allen F. Widner - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: Tron 7btn Usb Gaming Mouse PC (Personal Computers)
The very in-depth review from Bwappo says pretty much all you need to know, I just would like to add one important thing about this mouse.

- I have small hands with long, lanky fingers and for my grip style, this mouse is dead perfect. I can see how someone with large hands could have some comfort issues like Bwappo did, but if you don't fall in that category, I do believe this is the mouse for you.

some quick bullet points

- 5600 dpi, insane, i can never go back. (my previous was 1800 dpi)
- To reinforce what Bwappo said, software is the best mouse software I've ever experienced.
- Perfect small - medium hand size claw grip.
- Ambidextrous design. VERY IMPORTANT. I have left handed friends and this is a must for me.
- easy side button use. ALOT easier in comparison to my old Razer Diamondback.

Bottom line, If you dont have very large hands and prefer an ambidextrous design, this is the best gaming mouse on the market, hands down.
