Book Description

Feb. 4 2003

Roxanne St. Claire brings to life the beauty and danger of the Caribbean in her stunning debut novel, blending intrigue with white-hot passion for a suspenseful, sultry read.

Ava Santori is cooking up a storm in the family restaurant in Boston's North End when a call from the Coast Guard brings shattering news: her beloved brother was lost in a shipwreck. Determined to find out why the ship was steered into a hurricane, Ava packs her bags for the lush isle of St. Barts -- where she puts the blame squarely on the broad shoulders of the ship's owner.

Dane Erikson built the luxurious Utopia Adventures cruise line from the ground up and he's not about to let it sink. Enlisting Ava to help discover the truth about the doomed Paradisio, he finds himself unbearably tempted by this fiery, impetuous woman. And as their investigation causes danger to close in, he and Ava find their hearts leading them to the same place...straight into each other's arms.

From Booklist

Chef Ava Santori's world falls apart after she finds out her estranged younger brother, Marco, has been lost at sea. When the ambulance-chasing attorney who's setting up a class action suit against the cruise line hints that gross negligence caused the "accident," Ava decides to go to St. Barts and do a little investigating herself. Dane Erikson, owner of the cruise line and target of the lawsuit, is devastated by the loss of his crew, especially his friend Marco. Ava sets out determined to hate Dane, but the longer she's with him, the more unlikely it seems that he had anything to do with her brother's death. Eventually the two of them join forces to find out exactly what happened to the doomed ship. As their admiration, and, eventually, love, grow, so does the magnitude of the perils they face. Romance, danger, and adventure on the high seas in just the right combination makes St. Claire's debut a very impressive one. Shelley Mosley

I loved this book. I couldn't put it down once I started it. The story has twists and surprises and a sexy romance too. The characters are rich in texture and the description of the Caribbean made me feel I was there as I read. I can't wait for Roxanne St. Claire's next book to come out!!

4.0 out of 5 stars shows promise March 1 2003
Format:Mass Market Paperback
This is a fun read. It starts out great , shows real promise, but just misses. The charachters, especially Ava and Dane, are welldrawn and make you want to keep reading. There is some suspense but its weak and I would call this adventure rather than suspense. The descriptions of the islandsand the people make it worth reading.

4.0 out of 5 stars enjoyable romantic suspense Feb. 15 2003
Format:Mass Market Paperback
For five years Ava Santori and her famous family of chefs awaited to hear from her estrange brother Marco, but nary a word came until now. They learn that Marco died as a Second Mate on the ill-fated Paradisio passenger ship that went down when it sailed into Hurricane Carlos.
The grieving family wants to move past the incident. However, lawyer Grayson Boyd persuades Ana to come to the Caribbean Island of St. Bart to sue the ship's owner Dane Erikson who stands to make millions on the disaster. Ana believes the avaricious Dane caused Marco's death. Dane believes Ana failed to act like a sister to his best friend. Both wants to hate the other, but neither can ignore the growing love towards one another even while danger mounts from an illegal operation.
Though the continual misunderstanding between the lead protagonists seems difficult to accept especially midway into the novel, readers will enjoy this romantic suspense. The action focuses on the lead couple's misconceptions before twisting into an intrigue. The plot is at its finest when Dane and Ana argue over Marco while falling in love. The intrigue adds excitement, but detours the story line from its roots. Still the audience will appreciate Roxanne St. Claire's tale.
