Product Description

True Blood's second season, with episodes involving a new cast of monsters invading Louisiana swamp town Bon Temps, is notably gorier and more camp than the first season. While thematically the central focus in these 12 exciting episodes still revolves around faith and loyalty, these questions are complicated by displays of pagan ritual and obsession. Though the vampire/human relationship dilemma continues, spearheaded by lovers Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin) and vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), there is less emphasis on addiction to V, or vampire blood, and more time dedicated to outsiders whose supernatural talents make some episodes feel like superhero battles.

Episode 1, "Nothing but the Blood," sets the gory example with a brutal opening scene in which the local shaman has been eviscerated. While gruesome murders continue throughout the season, we become familiar with a new femme fatale, Maryann Forrester (Michelle Forbes), who hosts bacchanalia, such as the one in episode 4 ("Shake and Fingerpop") that gives Bon Temps a collective hangover. Also developing in this season are relationships between Sookie and Bill's vampire colleagues Eric (Alexander Skarsgård), Eric's master Godric, and a vampire queen who plays Yahtzee throughout episode 11 ("Frenzy"). The ever-increasing vampire interest in Sookie leads to her questioning her own supernatural psychic identity, especially in the final episode ("Beyond Here Lies Nothin'"), a semi-ridiculous, over-the-top segment that is more humorous than scary. Also corny but funny are the episodes featuring Fellowship of the Sun zealots Steve and Sarah Newlin (Michael McMillian and Anna Camp), and Jason Stackhouse's evangelical dedication to them (with Ryan Kwanten as Stackhouse). Perhaps the best episodes are those dedicated to the endangered plights of Sam Merlotte (Sam Trammell), Lafayette (Nelsan Ellis), and Tara (Rutina Wesley). New characters, like Tara's lover, Eggs (Mehcad Brooks), and the young, tempestuous vampire Jessica Hamby (Deborah Ann Woll), also add greatly to an already fabulous cast. Though the extras in this DVD set, "The Vampire Report (Special Edition)" and "Fellowship of the Sun: Reflections of Light," offer lighthearted, pseudo-documentary fun, they feel quaint next to the many wonderful episodes of this horror serial. --Trinie Dalton

3.0 out of 5 stars Season 2 - fast-forward to the good scenes June 28 2010
After watching Season 2, and especially the Maryann storyline, I was left wondering "where the heck did that come from?" I kind of got after the first few orgy scenes that Maryann wasn't what she seemed -- no need to hit me over the head with it. I don't consider myself a prude, but when the Maryann storyline descended into the realm of the ridiculous, I got awfully bored and started wondering how the actors could put up with such uninspired scripting.

One of the bright spots in Season 2 is the development of the Eric Northman character and his relationship with Sookie, and in the end I found myself fast-forwarding through the mindless orgy and party scenes to the Dallas storyline.

Since the Sookie Stackhouse novels themselves are written from a first-person perspective, I can understand the temptation of the TrueBlood writers to "flesh out" some of the other characters' activities, and even to create new characters/storylines that did not exist in the novels. However, Season 2 did so at the expense of the novels' core plot/character development and as a result lost a lot of the magic that was present in Season 1.

5.0 out of 5 stars If you liked Season One, you'll LOVE Season Two! April 24 2010
Another awesome - but faster and crazier - roller coaster ride of pure escapism for TB fans: intrigue, gore, sex, and loads of dark humor. These characters are so well written, you can't help but be interested in every one of them - no matter how minor. Loved the way each episode ending left us hungry for more. Cannot wait for Season Three!

5.0 out of 5 stars A vampire series with lots of bite March 1 2012
The second season of True Blood delivers all the thrills, twists and plot turns that made the first season so great. More drama, more action and more engaging characters in supernaturally gripping scenarios. Bring on season 3!

4.0 out of 5 stars huge improvement over season 1 May 2 2011
By K. Roy
seeing as I wasn't the biggest fan of Season 1, its nice to see that Season 2 started and finished strong.

Picking up from Season 1's cliffhanger ending, season 2 jumps right into a new story which i won't spoil.

Once again though, just as in season 1, something goes wrong mid season. Whereas in season 1 it was a "demon within" story between 2 side characters that was a pointless diversion, in season 2 the biggest problem is that it just takes so damn long to explain why the "evil" character is in fact...evil.

The biggest improvement for a character as far as I was concerned was Sookie's brother. Given his own side story he was truly given his chance to shine and no longer had to resort to having sex on each episode to be relevant.

Potential viewers should note that there is an increased amount of nudity in this season so if thats not your thing stay away.
