John Wayne hams it up as a one-eyed, broken-down marshal in this 1969 adaptation of Charles Portis's bestselling novel. Kim Darby plays the formal-speaking adolescent who goes to Wayne for help tracking down her father's killer, and singer Glen Campbell straps on his guns to join the quest. Directed by old lion Henry Hathaway (Rawhide), True Grit is largely a showcase for Wayne (who finally won an Oscar), but it is also a decent Western with a particularly stirring final act. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars Best movie ever Feb 20 2013
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I have loved this movie since childhood when I saw it in a tiny local theatre, my VHS copy was ruined, and finally found it's replacement. It's still my favorite movie.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Movie, Great DVD Aug 3 2012
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
This dvd is nearly imposdsible to find in the retail stores. Amazon made it so easy to buy.
First, the movie is amazing. John Wayne gives one of the best performances, as do the rest of the cast. This is a witty, gritty movie with rich characters and true to the era script. you cant go wrong
Now, about the dvd quality, Short of BluRay, this is probably the best that you will get. I found the movie quality flawless. There are no skips or stutters, the options and menus respond perfectly. You arent likely to find another dvd of this quality and price. The price of the dvd was so low that I wasnt sure what I was going to get, but it arrived in a collectors edition dvd case and cover, promptly and safely. Id recommend this to anyone

4.0 out of 5 stars story driven John Wayne western Jan 6 2010
By falcon TOP 1000 REVIEWER
Format:DVD
it took me forever to get around to watching this movie.but i'm glad i
did.it's not a typical action packed western.this one is more about the
story and the characters.it's a good story,it takes its time,so you get
a feel of what's going on without feeling rushed.you get to know the
characters a bit.the three main characters are an odd bunch to be
teamed up together, but it works.i liked the ending.it doesn't hit you
over the head with a sledgehammer, but ties things up neatly.the only
complaint i have is that at first,Kim Darby, who played Mattie
Ross, grated on me with her odd speech patterns and mannerisms.but she
soon became endearing.overall, for me True Grit is a 4/5

5.0 out of 5 stars This is one of Wayne's best!

This is typical John Wayne, in his later years, and one of his best. I think his best was The Shootist, perhaps closely followed by The Quiet Man. Read more
