Product Description

Quill & Quire

Earlier this year, New York University’s journalism school released a list of the top 10 works of journalism produced in the U.S. since 2000, as voted on by a panel of journalists and educators. If one were to compile a similar list for Canada, the fifth estate’s ongoing coverage of the Airbus scandal involving former Prime Minister Brian Mulroney and German-Canadian businessman Karlheinz Schreiber would deserve a place near the top.

Harvey Cashore, a senior producer for the fifth estate, has been covering this story since the beginning, and he details his findings in an exhaustive book filled with minutiae that still manages to be compulsively readable. In more than 500 densely packed pages, Cashore retraces virtually every step he took on the long and bumpy road that ultimately led to the Oliphant Commission.

For political junkies, the book is an invaluable collection of all the evidence in this incredibly troubling story. For students of the media, Cashore’s description of his approach to reporting, his behind-the-scenes look at how the fifth estate gets stories to air, his frank account of his doubts and rare missteps, and his description of the dubious behaviour of some prominent members of major news outlets will be as useful as almost any textbook.

The book’s only flaws are the brief glimpses into Cashore’s personal life, which should have been either fleshed out or eliminated altogether. But this doesn’t take away from the fact that Cashore has written an excellent book that deserves to be read by many Canadians and studied by aspiring journalists.

Review

PRAISE FOR THE LAST AMIGO: KARLHEINZ SCHREIBER AND THE ANATOMY OF A SCANDAL (CO-AUTHORED WITH STEVIE CAMERON): “Money, intrigue, war, a little sex, a couple of mysterious deaths - they`re all here....The Last Amigo peel[s] away the actions, the machinations, the false bonhomie and the true nature of this group of the rich and powerful.” ?Toronto Star

“The practice and philosophy of Schmiergelder is at the heart of The Last Amigo. It`s a cautionary tale of globalization, a glimpse into a world that many of us suspect exists but, especially in the Canadian media, prefer not to acknowledge.” ?Montreal Gazette

5.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating and brilliant account, Oct 12 2009

I've seen snipits of this book. This is a real life political thriller. You may know the ending, but finding out how it was uncovered makes for an exciting ride. This is one of those books where, when you pick it up, you really won't be able to put it down (advice: prepare your cappuccino before you start reading)

"One deceit needs many others, and so the whole house is built in the air and must soon come to the ground" - Baltasar Gracian

What makes Cashore's account of the Airbus Scandal so dynamic is that it takes the reader into the heart of the matter over the full length of his investigation as a reporter for the fifth estate. When completed, this book produces a web of compelling and sinister circumstances that convinces me beyond a shadow of a doubt that Mulroney, Moores, and Schreiber were the main parties involved in the passing of illegal commissions between Airbus and the Canadian government. While there is no actual prima facie evidence that would convict any of these three men in a court of law, the court of public opinion is a different matter. Cashore's thesis is based on some fairly astute findings that prove the following: 1) that Mulroney, Moores and Schreiber knew each other in a business capacity; 2) that every time the investigation got close to identifying a key piece of evidence such as the numbered accounts involving the codes Devon and Britain, law suits would be filed; 3) the German government proved mightily helpful in tracking down the business dealings of Schreiber as they involved the Airbus transactions; 4) there is overwhelming evidence that Schreiber stiffed both Mulroney and Moores of their share of the take; and 5) the Harper government has a larger role in this whole sordid affair than it is willing to admit. What I learned from this fascinating journey into the shady world of geopolitics is three-fold: 1) the truth does come out as the facts fall into place; 2) that there is truly no honor among thieves when money and reputations are at stake; and 3) patience is an indispensable virtue when it comes to ferreting out the truth. There is an abiding sense of justice in this whole wretched affair: it took some hard-ball questioning at the Oliphant Inquiry of 2008 into some relatively minor money transactions to finally repudiate Mulroney's claim that he never had serious business dealings with Schreiber before 1997. Seeing Mulroney admit under oath that he regretted hooking up with the sleazy Schreiber in the first place kind of clinches the argument for Cashore. The court of public opinion has now weighed in with its verdict, thanks in large part to Cashore and his fellow investigative reporters. Lots of humorous moments in this tale of intrigue and political chicanery.

A real life true story about how slimy Brian (apparently) acquired all his wealth.
A tale that Steven Harper did not wish revealed.
You have scum who mask themselves as politicians on the take.
This takes the cake!
Harvey Cashore (Fifth Estate) reveals all.
Stevie Cameron did not even go this far!
