Well Researched, more nuanced guidebook, Jun 26 2011
This review is from: Tuscany (5th edition): Cadogan Guide (Paperback)
This member of the CADOGAN series, like others in the group, is my favorite among all the published guides because the tone is collegial and well educated without being academic or dry. The entries are carefully selected and the descriptions of frescoes in churches, for example, provide art historical context as well as calling our attention details of particular human as well as historical interest. The guide is fun to read and provides description rather than merely a star system for sites, restaurants, etc., although favorites are sometimes highlighted. Also included are lots of practical tips. The CADOGAN guides, are neither overly academic, nor "dumbed down." They strike the right balance. If you need a guidebook with lots of diagrams, detailed maps and photographs, then you should supplement this guide with another.
