From Library Journal
As the field of children's writing burgeons, this essential reference work gets bigger and better. Published six years after the last edition, this new edition adds over 130 writers (only three were dropped), expands the reading list by some 20 critical works, and increases page and type size. Several entries (i.e., Burningham, Steig, Nancy Willard) have been completely and tellingly rewritten. Although critical and descriptive standards are high, readers are not always clearly directed to "the best" of a given writer's work. The appendix of foreign-language writers remains title-only; Janusz Korczak is a notable omission. British editing may account for the absence of Kathryn Lasky, Pam Conrad, and Brock Cole, but Brian Jacques is also among the missing. Quibbles aside, this work continues to gain in accuracy, utility, and inclusiveness.
