Book Description

Sep 29 2009
Many Twinkle fans were first introduced to Wenlan Chia’s signature fresh, young, whimsical style through her knitting books. But before Wenlan knitted, she sewed. And the pieces in her fashion line, Twinkle by Wenlan, are seen not just on the fashion runways and in the pages of InStyle, Lucky, and Vogue, but in high-end stores with high-end prices such as Barneys and Saks Fifth Avenue.

Now, with the easy-to-follow instructions, keen advice, and 25 full-size patterns in Twinkle Sews, you can create your own couture! Choose from one of Wenlan’s coveted patterns, including favorites like her Annie Hall Skirt, Origami Blouse, White Magic Dress, and Flapper Camisole. The patterns come in five different sizes–from 0 to 16–and are included on a CD for you to print at home. Each garment has its own PDF pattern that can be printed on 8½" x 11" (21.5cm x 28cm) paper. Follow the simple instructions to assemble the sheets and voilà—full-size patterns are at your fingertips.

Along with providing inventive patterns, Wenlan teaches core home sewing techniques–how to sew a seam, insert a zipper, and interface fabric–and gives you the building blocks of garment construction. You’ll have all the tools you need to turn what you see on glossy magazine pages into what’s hanging in your closet.

From helping you pick the best fabric for each project to providing valuable sewing tips, Wenlan gives you everything you need to sew, unleash your creativity in fabric, and bring your fashion dreams to life. To wear a Twinkle piece is to feel both flirtatious and smart. To make one yourself is all that and more.

I am an avid sewer and often find it difficult to find books that are 'on point' and current style-wise. If you are diggin' the dress on the cover you'll probably love the other designs too. I was truly surprised to see that it had not yet received any ratings stars because I own a ton of sewing related books and this one is definitely among my favs. I think it is a good book for all skill levels. If you are looking to make a stylish addition to your wardrobe, this is your book.

3.0 out of 5 stars Twinkle Sews Feb 1 2011
Format:Paperback
I agree with all the other reviewers that the styles in this book are gorgeous and original. However, this book is definately not for a beginner. The patterns lack precision and I don't know if that is due to the fact that you have to align the pages and stick them together or if there are issues with the grading of the patterns. Also it seems like the editors missed some glaring mistakes. For example, I made the poetry in motion dress. On the photograph of the dress and on the pattern there is an invisible zipper however the zipper is never mentionned in the instructions or the notions to buy. Then today I was getting started on one of the tops and had purchased the suggested amount of fabric only to realize I needed twice as much. (and no I'm not twice as fat) Next time I'll print the pattern first before buying the fabric but still...

5.0 out of 5 stars Very stylish book! July 9 2010

Wow! If you even remotely like the dress on the front, you'll love this book.
I can see myself making and loving every single one of these projects. So chic. So cute.

Main downfall: there are no physical patterns that come. You have to do the old print out 40 pages, line up, tape and cut (a la Burda-style). That is tedious, and costly when you factor in ink and paper costs. Probably, the main obstacle to me not quitting my job and sewing these full time.
