Exquisitely Sad,
This review is from: Two Lovers (DVD)
This is a romance film but it is not a "chick flick". The film is reminiscent of Ernest Borgnine in "Marty" in terms of the leading character being an adult yet living at home, somewhat personally troubled and trying to establish a meaningful connection with a woman. The setting of both rings similar as well, both living in very conservative apartment homes. However, the similarity is short-lived as we soon see that the film is more reminiscent of the type of theme presented in "Of Human Bondage".The film is very sombre for the most part as we feel for the main character in his suicidal plight yet managing to overcome his personal trauma through relationships with the opposite sex. He soon finds himself interested in a woman (who he met by a chance encounter) and she becomes his object of adoration. The feeling is not mutual and he is genuinely hurt when she professes that he is like a brother to her. This does not stop him in his relentless pursuit of her but he is hindered by the fact that her heart belongs to another, a married man who provides for her by taking her to fancy restaurants and getting driven around in his limo. Alongside this relationship, the main character met another woman through family and while she is interested in him, his pursuit of his fantasy woman overtakes him. The film builds on the relationships between the main character and the two women and to a lesser degree, his relationship with his parents. The character development in this film is excellent. Part of what happens in the end is expected as it is indicative of a one way relationship doomed to failure. However, the main character is forced to make a decision in the end, one that hinges on his own understanding of himself and life itself. This is truly a sad film in many ways but beautifully rendered with a message of hope.

This review is from: Two Lovers (DVD)
Two Lovers is a story about a man who doesn't quite fit in the world he inhabits, he feels awkward but believes within his own limited awareness that he knows what he needs and what is attractive to him inspires his actions. He is a man who loves his parents but cannot communicate fully with them, though they fully support him and are desperate to communicate with him. One day he meets a woman who has a beautiful confidence that charms him and then soon meets another woman who may not be awkward as he is but who is just as lost and also has a charm of her own; vulnerability. This second woman becomes his obsession and the story's telling of this obsession and the developments is told in such a realistic way and with an artistic temperament in the vein of many great directors such as Antonioni and De Sica of the Italian realist era and in the vein of Hitchcock's Vertigo and Rear Window. The writing beautifully reflects the man's self-awareness and his conflicts with others. James Gray's ability to involve us through the artistic voice of cinema and the realistic writing in the dialogue and non-dialogue sequences transcends the story into a film masterpiece. Even in the end when many will think his plight is depressing or sad, I know from really understanding the character and his needs that one of the saddest moments in his life is leading him to his ultimate happiness.

Two Lovers: Like a Great Play with the Atmospherics of a Brilliant Film,
This review is from: Two Lovers (DVD)
Like a best play you'd see on Broadway (or Stratford, Ontario for that matter). It's different, unpredictable, odd, beautiful, scary, sad, strange, funny, which is exactly what Joaquin Phoenix's performance is. Forget the Letterman nonsense. This must be the performance of the year. -Bookworm, Movie Nerd
