Product Description

Review

Typical Men, formidably researched, engagingly written, is a notable addition to British Film Studies.
-Journal of Popular British Cinema

Book Description

Typical Men is a fascinating cultural history of the changing images of men in British cinema from the Second World War to the present. It explores in detail the changing nature of the dominant male cultural types: the debonair gentleman, the Byronic hero, the Angry Young Man, the delinquent, the maladjusted veteran, and villains and comic fools. This book gives detailed readings of key films including In Which We Serve, They Made Me a Fugitive, Saturday Night and Sunday Morning, and From Russia With Love, investigating the performances of important male stars and producing a fresh interpretation of male roles. The book brings the story up to date with recent films such as Four Weddings and a Funeral and The Full Monty.
