The Tyrant Falls In Love Volume 2 (Yaoi) [Paperback]

For those of us just joining the Tyrant series here's the rundown: Morinaga is a gay man in love with his homophobic senpai at university. In book one, they (sort of) consummated their relationship. Since then it's been two months and nothing more has happened leaving Morinaga wondering if he might have just dreamed it all. But he wasn't dreaming and Souichi (his senpai) has been going to great pains to avoid a repeat of their night of passion. He even goes so far as to call it blackmail. So what's poor Morinaga to do, especially when he sets senpai off (yet again) by referring to their relationship as "friends with benefits"? Add to the mix, Morinaga's older brother who has come to town with some family news and a major grudge from the past. Needless to say, there's plenty of drama, and humor, to go around.

Volume 2 of the Tyrant series is fun, touching, and hilarious as ever. There's a bit of backstory for Morinaga (which thus far has been severely lacking) and some nice moments for Souichi to prove that he's not all bad. I admit it, I got choked up a couple of times. It was actually quite sweet. There is a bit of sex which I don't consider non-con but some might since Souichi insists it's blackmail. Me thinks the senpai doth protest too much. Things would go so much smoother if he could admit that he loves Morinaga. Of course that would take all the fun out of it. And of course, the art is as beautiful as ever. I say again, I love Hinako Takanaga's art. Whether in chibi or realistic form, their emotions come across quite clearly. I love to watch senpai freak out. The faces he makes are hilarious and a major part of the reason I love him. I have read these books over and over again and they never get old. Volume 2 is also among my favorites. Much better than volume 1 in my opinion. Plus, for anyone thinking that senpai is girly with his long hair, this is the book to prove them wrong.

Now onto the translation. Again, for the record, I've read the scanlations and I've read parts of the original Japanese. The translation here is decent, though still with some odd wording. I understand why they changed the term "sex friend" to "friends with benefits" but it just doesn't have the same ring. Some things are a little more Americanized than I prefer but I found a lot less to complain about here than I did in volume 1. Either way, I'm still thrilled that Tyrant has been translated and I'll keep buying the books as long as they keep putting them out. They only get better. Trust me.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to go preorder volume 3.

Oh my God I love this series! The dynamic between the seme and uke is so original and awesome. You'd expect the bossy jerky one to be on top, but it's the sweet one he pushes around. And the sweet one is constantly jumping his sempai! I love how sempai is totally cool the next day after he gets forced into sex. My God it's so hot! I like how they keep it real too. You want to beleive that the seme secretly loves it, but he's so upset he doesn't even want to go to school. That just shows what a big hurdle the author has to make this work. We're having to wait for it and I love the ride!

Tyrant is one of my favorite yoai, and I waited a long long time for it to be published in english. So of course I'm really happy with both volume 1 and 2! For anyone looking for a nice yaoi story Tyrant is the manga for you. (Actually anything by Hinako Takanaga is great).
