Classic Fusion prog, Mar 6 2004
This review is from: U.K. : U.K. (Audio CD)
The praise lavished on this title is deserved. The problem I have here isn't the music, it's the cd. They recorded it from less than clean source material, and even at that, they did a poor job. I was disappointed that that cd couldn't surpass the original vinyl in terms of playback quality. I finally went out and bought a cleaner piece of vinyl and recorded it onto my computer, remixing and editing out the pops and hisses in the process. The EG label is hit and miss in this regard. Bottom line the music is great, and if you don't want to go thru the tedious process I described, the cd is the way to go. Enjoy.

Atmospheric, synth-heavy, and complex, Feb 10 2004
This review is from: U.K. : U.K. (Audio CD)
The excellent debut by supergroup U.K. is comprised of pieces that owe as much to speed freak jazz-rock fusion as to the spacey, synthesizer dominated epics pioneered by Tangerine Dream, Klaus Schulze, and especially Jean Michel Jarre. The electronica-like aspects are brought in by keyboardist/violinist Eddie Jobson, who creates vast, gray, and misty soundscapes with a Yamaha CS80 polyphonic synthesizer (amongst other synths) that swirl around the dense textures created by the Bruford/Wetton rhythm section. Apart from the atmospheric, lush, and synth-heavy aspects of this debut, many of the pieces are virtuoso showcases for Eddie Jobson and guitarist Alan Holdsworth. Of course, John Wetton and Bill Bruford are superb as well, with Bruford's drumming as crisp and precise as anything he ever did with Yes or King Crimson. All in all this should prove to be an extremely enjoyable piece of music for folks that can appreciate Jean Michel Jarre as well as Yes. Highly recommended.

A classic and influential album, Jan 9 2004
This review is from: U.K. : U.K. (Audio CD)
A solid and influential album. Not just the leggato sound of Allan Holdsworth had influenced on the modern prog rock/metal, but the keyboard atmospheres and the complex drumming (well this is Bill Bruford!) became a legend as it is a perfect mix of rock and fusion and experimental music despite the supergroup line-up. It also has one of the best singers in this world, Wetton and his usual great bass playing. No surprise that Eddie Jobson is a legend up to date because of this job on UK. The next album, didn't have Holdsworth and Brufford, but had another instrument monster: Terry Bozzio. UK s/t and UK "Danger Money" are two seminal modern prog rock albums.
