Book Description

Tactics is the art and science of employing all available means to win battles and engagements. Specifically, it comprises the actions taken by a commander to arrange units and activities in relation to each other and the enemy. Filled with diagrams of attack plans, defensive strategies, and troop movements, U.S. Army Tactics Field Manual is the playbook the U.S. Army uses to employ available means to win in combat. This book provides combat-tested concepts and ideas modified to exploit emerging Army and joint capabilities. This book focuses on the organization of forces, minimum essential control measures, and general planning, preparation, and execution considerations for each type and form of combat operation. It is the common reference for all students of the tactical art, both in the field and the Army school system.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good, but could be better April 15 2014
By Emily - Published on Amazon.com
I'm only 60 pages into the manual, so take this with a grain of salt:

Even though the manual warns that it needs to be read alongside the other field manuals, I find this book to be fairly accessible. I have no military training, but I can understand most of what the book is referring to without googling up terms. It gives examples at the right time and has a lot of helpful graphics. Even two chapters in, I've already learned a lot about the basics of military tactics.

Like most manuals, it tends to explain concepts in a few paragraphs when all it needed was a few sentences. It also has a lot of "dictionary speak", which is fine for military officers but not as appealing to any civilians reading it.

My main critique is that the organization of the information is subpar. The vocabulary definitions occasionally refer to concepts that aren't introduced until several pages later (such as when the book describes a trigger line as a type of phase line without telling the reader what a phase line is).

But if you can ignore the convoluted writing style, the book is quite informative. It is the army's field manual, so it's much more detailed than other sources I've come across. I'll have to wait until I finish the book before I can wholeheartedly recommend it though.

This manual gives a detailed analysis of field tactics, Giving you historical examples of the corresponding tactic, with rich information along with a abundance of pictures for those who prefer them. I would recomend this book to the president. But this read should not be read separate but with other similar books to help you build your stratagems, and tactics repertoire.
