Gameplay
Just as in the Where's Waldo books, the focus of Where’s Waldo?: The Fantastic Journey is finding Waldo, along with other characters or items hidden throughout the game. Hints are available through Waldo's pet dog Woof who is always willing to help out with puzzle-solving. As players traverse the game's many levels they will cross path with a variety of characters, most friends but also Waldo's nemesis and polar opposite Odlaw, who is intent on misleading Waldo at the most inopportune times.

Characters
The world of Where’s Waldo?: The Fantastic Journey is packed full of images and oddities, but there are faces that players will soon get to know. Reoccurring characters in the game include:

  • Waldo - The world famous globe-trotter in stripes is back on the road and inviting you along for the ride! Join Waldo as he embarks on a quest to find twelve ancient scrolls hidden throughout twelve fantastic worlds.
  • Wizard Whitebeard - As Waldo's magical mentor, there is much to be learned from Wizard Whitebeard, so look to him for guidance on your journey. One piece of advice, though: don’t mind the wizard’s funny side –he’s known for his quirky sense of humor.
  • Wenda - A fellow travel addict, Wenda is never far behind Waldo on his adventures. In addition to her uncanny fashion sense, Wenda has a keen eye for photography and is always carrying – and losing her camera.
  • Woof - Waldo’s four-legged friend, Woof, is there to help you during the search (but only if you have a bone). He’s a very clever dog with a penchant for puzzles, so don’t be surprised if he wants to play a game or two with you along the way.
  • Odlaw - Watch out for this fellow. His dastardly plans to trick Waldo include unleashing a mess of Swamp Creatures that wreak havoc and overrun each location. Be sure to keep an eye out for Odlaw’s signature black and yellow stripes, because you’re the only one who can stop him.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but wait for a big price drop!, Nov 1 2009

This review is from: Where's Waldo? (Video Game)
I think this should cost $15 or less. At almost $30, it's way overpriced! This review is specifically for the wii version.

There are only 12 scenes and they're taken from the books. Since it's subtitled "The fantastic Journey", I believe the scenes are all from "The Fantastic Journey" book--but I'm not sure on that. Yes, there is some animation and the game does speak most things so it works for kids who can't read. Yes, they did move where people are hidden so it's not a complete waste if you have the book (but the book is totally better!). The book is $8 on amazon (the paperback reissue). Your kids will get a lot more entertainment from the book and you won't have to worry about them scratching a disk!

Pros:
--You can do split screen 2 player.
--Very well animated. Not everything is animated, but there's always something moving on screen.
Great voices.
--They do mix up the gameplay with a few ideas like some "what's different in these two pictures" mini games.

Cons:
--short game, only 12 scenes
--Another draw of the books is that the whole map is spread out in front of you. Here you see a small part of the scene and scroll around. I think the game knows this is a pain because there are many scenes where you can't scroll around (or can only scroll a small area of the whole map).
--Oh and finally there are 15 second load screens! You choose your save game, and there's a 15 second load. You the choose your level, and there's a 15 second load. Then there's a lot of game play without load, but when you're comparing to a book--long load time is certainly a strike against the game.

The game is fun and it plays well. I'm sure they spent a lot of money animating it and doing the voice work. But for $30, it's totally not worth it. You can get the complete waldo for $30! Where's Waldo? The Complete Collection Six books for the same price as one short game! This really should have either been a $10 wiiware game with less animation/voice or it should have included at least 3 books worth of stuff!

If you like the search and find puzzle and want a good game for the wii: I suggest "Ultimate I spy" because it takes the I spy books to the next level. Ultimate I Spy The game lasts a bit longer, uses the I spy gameplay but in 3-d, and plays really well.

If I hadn't played the I spy game first, I might have liked the Waldo game better. As far as the Waldo game goes, you can't just take a book and use the same format in a game. You'll just want the book instead. Imagine a movie based on a book that just read every page of the book--totally wouldn't work! I Spy Wii is a game. Where's Waldo Wii is a book failing to be a good game.

3.0 out of 5 stars Simple Puzzle Game, Nov 9 2009

This review is from: Where's Waldo? (Video Game)
The WII game is ok but I would suggest renting it or buying it used. There's not too much to the game besides a dozen or so 'pages' where you find Waldo and his friends, special objects, and enemies. There is also compare games (what's different between two pictures) and identify where a small picture clip is on the mural.

This game does not have too many scenes / levels and though it offers a few different types of puzzles there are not enough of them to keep you playing the game beyond the first few uses. As noted, it's a bit annoying that you play a puzzle fairly quickly and then have to wait and wait for the game to load this and that.

I jumped on this game because I got bored of Mii Matching on Play - probably will research more before spending nearly $30 on a game next time!

I enjoyed playing the game. It reminds me of the book, except that there are a couple of levels you can choose from in regards to difficult. I played it on easy and intend to go back and play it on the harder level. There are some timed portions of the game that can be a little more challenging.
